Doodle for Google

Doodle for Google is a huge art competition where students of all ages compete to create a Google logo. This year's prompt was "I show kindness by...". I made my act of kindness "making a grilled cheese for someone" because that's a way I show kindness. I drew two creatures, each holding half the grilled cheese, with the cheese spelling out Google.

I used a painting app on an iPad and my finger to create this digital piece. My first step was sketching it out in pencil in my sketchbook. I then took a picture of it, uploaded it to the app, and drew over it. I used a pen brush to draw in colors and then traced them over with a thin gray pen. I then added some smaller details like the lines on the sandwich and the creatures. Since I don't have the full version of the app I couldn't create several layers which is a common technique in digital art that lets you layer different drawings on top of one another so you can work on one layer at a time. I had to do it all on one page which was pretty hard and took a little bit longer.

I came up with the grilled cheese idea when we were brainstorming ways we show kindness before we started the project. I had come up with this idea and pictured the cheese being the word Google so I just decided to stick with it. I think making food for other people is always a nice thing to do. Sometimes, especially when you aren't expecting it, a grilled cheese hits different and people always get really happy if you surprise them with a grilled cheese.
