Incomplete

size?

Incomplete is a picture I scanned of my hand, palms down, with a print of another hand missing it's ring finger placed on top of the photo. The piece has contrast between the black, the color, and the bright white hand. It's missing a more interesting composition and background action.

To make this I first put my hand in one of the scanners in the art room. I wasn't sure if it would work since the top wasn't able to close down all the way, but the scan turned out fine. I wanted to try scanning faces, but didn't have time and might try doing it for another project. I printed out the scan on top of thick matte photo paper and then cut off the borders. I measured and carved a hand similar to the one from the picture onto a block of linoleum rubber. I used a smaller carver to do the details and wrinkles of the palm. Then, I rolled white block paint on top of the carving, pressed it down on to the picture, and then pressed it down to print it on. I trimmed down the paper, but forgot to add a border.

The message behind this piece is pretty literal. Imperfection can often mean something that's incomplete so I wanted to print just one hand. The missing hand I printed on with a different material and made it missing a finger. I think I can definitely push my space more and add more to the background.
