Mom's not great at giving haircuts

9" x 8"

Mom's not great at giving haircuts is based on a true story. It's a watercolor painting of my little sister looking into the bathroom mirror with a bad haircut. There's hair everywhere and scissors, cream, toothpaste, a toothbrush, sink, and soap on the counter.

I used watercolor for this because I use acrylics a lot and wanted to switch it up. Watercolor allows me to create bright colors, but also create more shadows by adding layers of paint. Watercolor also tends to be quicker. I first asked my sister to model as a reference and this took a couple tries because I had to get her in the perfect position in the mirror and the foreground. Once I got the picture, I somewhat copied it onto watercolor paper. I changed a couple details like the painting, the objects on the counter, and the colors. I tried to choose colors that complimented each other and were bright, but didn't look out of place in the bathroom. I really enjoyed adding shadows with the watercolor, but I did some of them wrong making some objects look like they're floating. If I could change one thing it would be that.

I walked into the bathroom one day and my mom was trying to give my sister a haircut. She looked pretty proud of what she had done, but she could see the huge slant in the bottom of the hair. This inspired this piece because it's a pretty imperfect haircut and it falls in line with my sustained investigation regarding imperfections. I hadn't intended it to have anything to do with what was going on right now with Coronavirus, but after my peers gave me feedback a couple of them said that it reminded them of someone being in quarantine and getting super bored (which is something we're all dealing with right now) and deciding to cut their hair. I really liked this idea so I guess my piece can be taken either way or a mix of both!
