COVID-19 Response

Stay Home

This was the third art piece I made in response to COVID-19 and for this one I decided to paint a peaceful and positive scene of a girl playing the guitar in her home. The message "It's you chance to learn guitar. Stay home" was inspired by a couple of my friends who said they were teaching themselves the guitar during quarantine. I wanted it to shine a positive light on the situation.

I used watercolor, white gel pen, and digital art to create this. I began by looking through the Amplifier global art competition to get ideas and inspiration. There were so many different kinds of art and posters with strong messages about COVID. I then sketched out a basic idea and asked my sister to be a photo reference. I used many different watercolor paints and painted layers. I darkened some areas to create shadows like behind the cat and the pot. I used to white gel pen for the moon and stars in the window. I wanted to use watercolor because although watercolor has a lot of pigment it has a soft muted look and I wanted that to relate to my peaceful message. However, I struggled with trying to make the text pop and legible. I decided to bring my finished piece into a digital art app and write the message on there so that it was brighter.

It's a very universally tough time right now because of the pandemic and although there are very terrible things happening there are some positive ways to look at the situation. For many, quarantine might be the time to do that thing they've been putting off like learning the guitar. I also wanted to emphasize the message of staying home during this because that's how you can do your part in stopping the spread.
