One Eared Ernie

For Sustained Investigation #7 I used a linoleum rubber block and printed a drawing of a night sky, stars, a person with one ear, and some plants. This project is more about surface level imperfections rather than a deeper meaning. The imperfection is the character in the print having one ear.
I used a 6" x 4" piece of linoleum rubber and used a pencil to sketch my design on the surface. I used metal carvers to take out chunks of the rubber and create the stamp of the drawing. The hardest part for me is deciding what should be carved out and left in since I wanted to have outlines and facial features. The hardest parts were the smaller sections like going around the eyelashes beneath the eye. Once I carved everything out, I used a paint roller to roll printing ink onto the rubber. I pushed and hammered the rubber in to piece of blue tinted drawing paper. When I peeled it off it was like a printed stamp.
I wanted to make a printed shirt for one of my friends who has a birthday coming up. So I decided to make a print that would be fun on a shirt and could still be my sustained investigation project. My friend really likes the faces and characters I draw so I thought I'd do the print of one of those characters. I made his facial features in the style that I usually doodle in. His imperfection is his one ear and I made on of the prints tilted. It's not a very deep answer to my sustained investigation, but it still makes sense.
