Imperfect Harmony

16 x 22

Imperfect Harmony is a messy busy painting with a big face with purple cheeks, a "I Voted Today!" sticker, a muffin, a naked body with eyes, some macaroni, and some other things.

In this project I wanted to paint big. I used paint sticks for most of the piece so that I could focus on bigger strokes instead of struggling over small details. It kind of worked, but then I traced over lines with black acrylic paint and a thin paint brush. Last time I tried to use paint sticks I put it down and then blended it in with my fingers. This time I tried to leave it as is instead of blending things in. I did however, layer some colors on top of each other which ended up looking blended.

In class, Ms. Medsker showed us an artist named Basquiat who makes contemporary art with a lot of shapes, colors, lines and often marries it with text. I was inspired by his style and wanted to try something out of my comfort zone. I made it a random arrangement of different things happening in my life. For example, the I just voted sticker is because I had voted for the first time the previous day. I wrote "Gaslands" with a water drip because in AP Environmental Science class we are learning about how we get our energy. We watched a movie called Gaslands which talked about how gas drilling negatively effects the world and people's drinking water. I drew a muffin and macaroni because while I was painting in the living room my mom was making those things in the kitchen. For this piece I actually came up with the title before I knew what I was going to make. I wanted it to be all random objects that seemed like they wouldn't go together, but do because they're all apart of things going on in the world or my life. It's called Imperfect Harmony because all these things coincide together in an imperfect harmony.
