Scholastic I

Steel

13.5 x 9.5

I wanted to make something that I could use for the "New York Life" Scholastic competition. I painted a multi-framed painting. The main one is of a bed with a picture of Steel and a journal with words coming out. The second is of an envelope that says "From Steel" and has butterflies coming out of it. The last one was one that I redid a couple times, now it's just words and a couple small butterflies like from the other frame.

I used watercolors for the bed and picture, markers for the butterflies, a small black pen to trace everything and write words, and a piece of tinted paper to fold the envelope. I had to look up how to make an envelope and tried a couple times till it was the size I wanted and then I just taped it down. I made butterflies on a separate piece of paper, cut them out, and taped them on top. I used my own bed as a reference image and laid my journal and picture of Steel on top.

I'm kind of disappointed in how it turned out because I really wanted to make art about the subject, but I think I had a hard time actually getting it all down the way I pictured. I think I should remake it and make the bed look more like a bed maybe with softer edges and markings. I think the other two frames could somehow be added into the main one because I don't think the multiple frames is that effective in this piece.
