Red Bull Run
10 x 7
Red Bull Run is a picture of my two friends Grace and Sam at a gas station in Freeport. Grace is buying us some peach flavored Red Bull to keep us awake. The picture has little doodles on it. There is an overlay of Red Bull cans on top with doodles in the white spaces/background.
I made this project by combining photography, drawing, and printmaking. I first printed out a picture I had taken and then glued it on to Bristol paper. I then printed my linoleum carving on top of the picture and paper. I made the print by carving designs of the Red Bull can in to a rectangle of rubber. I rolled blue print ink onto it and then pressed it down on to the paper. I then went over it with red and yellow to add the details in the logo. I used different colors of gel pen to draw and trace little doodles on to the picture like tracing their clothes and making lines around the red bull on the counter to draw attention to it. I used the same gel pens to create a background and fill the white space of the piece. I think I definitely could have done a better job with the background and white space. It looks empty and rushed.
How can I use space to show the imperfections in life and art? That's my question for my sustained investigation. In this project, I wanted to use this picture of my friends buying Red Bull and wanted to focus on the Red Bull by making a print of it on top. We were all hanging out and were getting exhausted so we drove to the gas station for snacks and energy drinks. This happens sometimes, but it's rarely planned. I wanted the Red Bull to represent the imperfection in people. Life is always filled with getting tired at the wrong times and many unplanned trips to the gas station for Red Bull. I also tried to overlay the print and the picture to push my use of space and answer my sustained investigation.
