3D Reflection

Art class has never been easy peasy, but 3D was a very different kind of challenge. It pushed me in a different way because I'd only ever done 2D art (except for a couple projects in foundations). In 3D, I had to create compositions that were good to look at from all sides and filled the space. It was definitely hard to finish a project quickly and it also took A LOT more experimenting then I had realized. I was able to try materials like paper, clay, sculpey, plaster, plastic, cloth, glass, and cardboard. Most of these were completely new materials to me and took a lot of working out to get to a final product. I'm so grateful I was exposed to making this kind of art, but some of it was really frustrating. Starting off the year, I was so excited to try clay. It turned out to be really hard for me, it was hard for me to relax when using clay because it was so hands on and I kept worrying it would dry out. I rushed it and got angry when I couldn't make a certain shape or a certain facial feature the right way. I always love how clay looks in the end though and I think I really want to work with it more so I can learn to calm down when doing it. Another challenging material was glass, I tried to make a glass clock and it didn't really work out. When cutting the glass into a circle, I had to break it and crack it. Little pieces would go everywhere and I could feel little invisible sharp shards stabbing me and it honestly terrified me, but I really wanted to use it so I kept trying.

I think that even though 3D was really hard, it was a great introduction to that kind of art and I'm excited to do more of it. I'm proud of myself for trying different materials and techniques. It also took a lot of problem solving and starting over. I think the project I'm most proud of is the sgraffito animal because I really love the finished product. That project had so many different steps to it like firing the clay twice, but the end product was so satisfying. I also liked my Concentration #4 project where I used beach trash to make a lobster. That project was difficult to begin because I felt like I just had a bag of trash and didn't know what to do with it. It ended up having a lot of meaning to me especially because it was made out of trash. Although I liked some of the projects I made in my concentration, if I had to do something differently, I think I would change my concentration focus on plastic.

Overall, I think this class really helped me see a different side of art. I don't know if you can really see my improvement from start to finish because I think it really depended on the project. Some projects in the beginning I really liked and some at the end I wasn't as proud of and vice versa. Regardless, I'm really glad I took this class and got exposed to new techniques and ways to think about creating. I will definitely keep trying to master clay and cut glass.

Thanks to Ms. Medsker for always answering all my questions and helping me through the whole class. Sorry I never turned in projects on time. :)
