About Our Program

The mission of Physical Education is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.

Our program provides a standards based curriculum that endorses the worth of a lifetime of physical activity. The program will guide students in the process of becoming physically active and healthy for a lifetime. The goal of the program is to offer students the opportunity to explore and experience physical skills and good sportsmanship through physical activity, which may provide a better quality of life.

Intro & Course Objectives

The focus of the elementary physical education program is the introduction and exploration of physical education skills and concepts. As an important part of the elementary school program that uniquely contributes to the school's overall goals, physical education emphasizes the total development of the child (i.e. physical, motor, cognitive, social, and emotional development). Physical education course will provide an individualized, developmentally appropriate, and personally challenging instructional program that advances the student's knowledge, confidence, skills and motivation to engage in a lifelong, healthy, active lifestyle. Physical education course will help students to:

1. Demonstrate competency in many movement forms and proficiency in few movement forms;

2. Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills;

3. Exhibits a physically active lifestyle;

4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness;

5. Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings;

6. Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings;

7. Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction;

Classroom Procedures & Expectations

Physical education is an important component of a child's education. In order for your student to get the most from his/her physical education, he/she needs not to be late for the classes and to participate safely and cooperatively in all activities during class.

Students may be excused from participating in some activities during class if they have a note from their doctor. Please refrain from excusing your child from PE unless you feel vigorous activity will endanger your child. Many activities we do in class can be modified in some fashion so your child can participate safely. If you feel your child needs to have his/her activity level reduced please send a note with your child.

Non-participating students must sit in a designated area and will not be permitted to do other class work during their P.E. activity time.

Lesson Plan

For each physical education class the teacher will have a focus (skills, strategies, rules, etc., to be taught) and student objectives. Each class will consist of four components.

1. Warm up period - each student will complete a warm-up routine as instructed by the physical education teacher. Each warm up routine should include sport specific exercises (exercises related to the sport being played during class).

2. Instruction - The skills, rules, strategies, etc., that are being taught are done during this portion of the lesson.

3. Practice - During this segment of the lesson, the students will be given the opportunity to practice the skills that they learned during the class.

4. Modified Game - The last portion of the lesson will consist of a modified game. The teacher will select teams based on skill levels, and will make any necessary modifications.

Sport themes include, but are not limited to soccer, basketball, volleyball, ping-pong, gymnastics, handball and fitness concepts.

Fitness Testing

Fitness Testing is done once per Semester. Our students participate in 5 fitness tests that measure the areas of strength, speed manipulative skills and flexibility. The fitness tests the students participate in are seat and reach, trunk lift, 10m run, long jump, underhand throwing.

The FITNESSGRAM uses health-related standards to evaluate performance. The desired performance standard for each fitness-area test is the Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ). This standard represents the level of fitness associated with good health. Students should strive to achieve a score within the HFZ for each fitness-area test.
