Nova International School is committed to providing the opportunity for non-native Macedonian speakers to learn about the culture, traditions, geography of Macedonia and introduce them to the basics of the Macedonian Language. Macedonian Language and Culture is offered at NOVA to all non-native students from grades 1 - 5. It is a dynamic, interactive program where the language is learned through culture, music, games, cuisine, storytelling, crafts, singing and dancing. From the content of these activities, children absorb the Macedonian culture (traditions, family values, legends, food, landmarks…). As children create their own portfolios, they learn grammar and reinforce their knowledge of the spoken language.

The aims of this course are to enable students to:

  • Appreciate and understand Macedonian culture and society
  • Learn and apply basic Macedonian language skills
  • Understand the values of international mindedness
  • Become creative, critical empathetic thinkers
  • Compare and contrast diverse cultures

At NOVA, we begin simply in grades one through three by immersing the children in the spoken language. In the first three grades, the children are given the sound and feel of the language through verses, songs, games, and finger plays. Interesting, colorful presentations and games help the children deepen this experience. In grade 1 all work is oral, with no reading or writing, in grade 2 we introduce the alphabet to them and basic reading and writing, while in grade 3 they learn everyday topics, together with reading and writing.

As students enter grade four and are fairly adept at reading and writing Macedonian, we dedicate these two academic years on learning about Macedonian culture, comparing it with their own cultures and trying to understand the differences and similarities. The goal is to understand that there is value both in the similarities and the differences between different countries. Learning about the country where they live and about the Macedonian culture makes them understand each other better.

Throughout different interactive activities, projects and assignments they are researching on their own,and creating interesting presentations
