Grade 1

Course Goals

First Grade students work with a variety of materials including markers, crayons, paint and clay. The curriculum includes learning about the role of artists in society, recognizing art as a form of communication, identifying elements of art like line, shape, color, texture and space, as well as developing basic drawing techniques. It’s my goal to have students use their imagination, feel proud of their work and listen to the opinions of others. The class places an emphasis on group activities to help students develop important skills in collaboration.

Art initiates, develops, and encourages:

* Individual expression

* Imaginative expression and sharing

* Students' aesthetic awareness

* Learning to "see" as an artist and become a visual learner

* Knowledge and use of various media

* An introduction significant artists throughout art history

* An introduction to an artist's glossary of terms

* An integrated curriculum through the visual arts

We draw a city playing with organic and geometric shapes.

In the visual arts a cityscape (urban landscape) is an artistic representation, such as a painting, drawing, print or photograph, of the physical aspects of a city or urban area.

We study the use of water colors.
