Grade 2

Course Goals

Second grade students review and refresh their understanding of line, shape, color, texture, space and form. In addition, they are introduced to the more complex aspects of color theory. Through a variety of individual and collaborative projects, students begin to employ the technique of blending colors and build an understanding of color relationships. Using materials, tools, and techniques in both traditional and experimental ways, they explore a variety of mixed media exercises designed to integrate art concepts with cross-curricular units of study. These projects encourage students to build connections between what they are learning in a visual arts context and what they are learning in other academic disciplines.

Art initiates, develops, and encourages:

* Individual expression

* Imaginative expression and sharing

* Students' aesthetic awareness

* Learning to "see" as an artist and become a visual learner

* Knowledge and use of various media

* An introduction to significant artists throughout art history

* An introduction to different genres and movements throughout art history

* An introduction to an artist's glossary of terms

How humans work

The Body is a wonderfully designed structure. It is an expression of the art of life, with its lines, curves, shapes, colours and dimensions. In this unit, we will develop an appreciation of the body shape, including body postures - sitting, standing or even sleeping, and movements - walking, running, dancing etc. through various art forms.

We get to know the works of Vincent Van Gogh.

His art inspired us to create a landscape. We really tried to use his short-brush coloring technique.
