Blackwater septic tanks: monitoring proxies and effects of the long septage storage periods

Although septic tanks are the most applied on-site sanitation system in low- and middle-income countries, the monitoring and evaluating data are still demandingly challenging due to the chaotic nature of constructed septic tanks with unstandardised designs, and different characteristics of households. This study aimed to scrutinise the current conditions of blackwater septic tanks in order to discuss the effects of long septage storage periods, and express the proxy parameters to estimate the effluent quality to overcome the challenging of the monitoring practice.
