This subject runs for Semester 1 and 2.
Art at Year 7 introduces students to a range of materials and techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture. Students
learn to plan and make creative works in different styles, that express their individual ideas about themselves and their world
keep a visual diary in which they record their ideas and reflect on their work
(through activities and discussion) analyse and learn to write about artworks from different times and cultures
Year 7 Drama program focuses on developing confident and creative performers. Students are introduced to improvisation, script work, character development and movement while developing communication and teamwork skills. While this subject has a performance and stagecraft focus, students will have many opportunities to create, rehearse and perform a range pieces.
English studies in Year 7 are focused on laying foundations for secondary school level reading and writing.
Students deconstruct how authors create characters and ideas through specific language choices in a range of novels, films, speeches and short stories.
Students write and present their understanding of these language choices.
Students are supported explicitly with grammar and punctuation instruction to improve the mechanics of their writing.
Students look at real-world applications of communication, such as persuasive writing, through an integrated curriculum Innovation Expo with Science and Maths.

Students explore how language can be used ton construct and present arguments in order to persuade an audience
Health focuses on the life skills students need to deal with the mental, physical and social issues that will arise throughout their lives. Students will explore their personal identity, mental health, puberty, sexuality education, and smoking. This is a semester long subject.
In Humanities, students will explore Geography, History, and Civics and Citizenship across the year.
History: students explore the ancient world, beginning with Ancient Australia (Deep Time History). They develop historical thinking skills such as chronology, using sources and evidence, and understanding how historians and archaeologists investigate the past. Students also study Ancient China, examining key features of its society, beliefs, and innovations, and how these shaped daily life and governance.
Geography: students investigate Water in the World, exploring the importance of water as a resource and how it is managed sustainably, with a local focus on the Yarra River. They also study Place and Liveability, assessing what makes places more or less liveable and evaluating the liveability of their local area using geographical data and fieldwork.
Civics and Citizenship: students learn about the Australian political system, including how laws are made, how voting works, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. They begin to understand the values that underpin Australia’s democracy and the importance of active participation in civic life.
The purpose of Home Group is to promote and maintain a supportive environment and positive relationship with the teacher and the class. This support students in developiong a sense of belonging and connectedness within the school, and promotes an environment that enables the whole student to thrive. Home Groups meet once per week.

Students can elect to study either Italian or Chinese (Mandarin) language; in doing so they commit to study their chosen language in both Year 7 and Year 8.
The Languages course aims to develop students’ communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Cultural content is explored through individual and group research, class discussion and audio-visual content. Students participate in excursions and/or incursions in order to enhance their language learning and cultural awareness.
The Year 7 Mathematics course builds on students’ existing number skills and lays the foundation for working mathematically across a range of dimensions.
Students are provided with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge of mathematical concepts and applications that are purposeful in society.
Students are encouraged to work collaboratively and with digital technology and hands on manipulatives to solve problems. They are also encouraged to document their thinking using mathematical language and conventions to establish and develop literacy and fluency in mathematical language.
This course enables students to regularly participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity. Students undertake a range of individual and group activities that further develop their motor and coordination skills.
Some of the sports and activities we cover in Physical Education at Year 7 are Athletics, Fitness, Team Games, Gymnastics and Bat and Ball Sports.
Students are introduced to the fundamental concepts of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Physics studies include Forces in everyday life, how simple machines function, and concepts related to building space bases on other planets
Chemistry studies include eemploying particle theory to explore the composition of matter
Biology studies include different animal groups and their characteristics. This includes a zoo excursion where students apply their knowledge to design animal enclosures to meet the specific needs of individual species
This program focuses on developing sport-specific, tactical skills. Students are introduced to and given an understanding of the rules and basic motor skills for each interschool sport running at BSC. They then select a sport to specialise in the for the remainder of the term. Students develop sport-specific skills and learn to work cooperatively with members of a team.
