The Strings Program is led by two dedicated teachers, offering instruction in violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Students have the opportunity to join the school’s string ensemble, which rehearses weekly and performs throughout the year, including at the Sydney Road Festival.
The program introduces students to a wide range of musical styles—classical, folk, tango, mariachi, flamenco, hip hop, and jazz—reflecting the diversity of today’s music world. Lessons focus on developing strong technical skills, including scales, arpeggios, sight-reading, and ensemble playing, while also encouraging students to explore and bring in their own pieces.
The program provides a supportive environment where students can collaborate across year levels, grow as musicians, and experience the joy of performing both individually and as part of a group.
The Brunswick Secondary College Guitar Program is supported by a team of three dedicated guitar teachers, offering a breadth of expertise across classical, jazz, and rock styles.
Students develop strong foundational technique while also exploring contemporary approaches used in rock, pop, and folk music. Lessons focus on practical skills such as fingerpicking, strumming, scales, and reading notation, supported by music theory and composition to deepen musical understanding.
Guitarists can join dedicated ensembles, participate in whole-school theatre productions, and perform at events such as Rock Bands Night - often an exciting first opportunity to form a band and play live. With a friendly and supportive atmosphere, the program helps students to grow as confident musicians, collaborate effectively, and explore a wide range of musical styles.
At Brunswick Secondary College, the Bass Guitar program focuses on double bass, electric bass, and low strings ensembles.
Students develop essential skills including reading bass clef, tablature, writing walking bass lines, and mastering movable scale shapes. Lessons emphasize both technique and musicality, using resources such as Hal Leonard, Rufus Reid’s Technique, Rockschool, and FastTrack Bass to build a solid fingerstyle foundation.
The program allows students to explore the melodic and rhythmic role of the bass, participate in ensembles, and perform alongside other musicians, fostering both confidence and collaborative musicianship.
