In a studio environment, students plan and create a range of artworks across different mediums and, through this, develop a personal art style. They will use a variety of techniques and processes including drawing, painting and collage. They develop skills in responding to the arts through analysing selected artworks from different periods, from major twentieth-century art movements like Surrealism and Expressionism, through to the influence of Pop Art on contemporary culture. Assessment will include a folio of artworks with accompanying visual diary, and there will be an emphasis on skill development for the senior years, including an end of unit examination.
Art in Year 10 builds on Art, Design and Technology electives undertaken from Years 7 to 10, and supports VCE subjects such as Studio Art, Product Design and Technology (Wood and Textiles), Visual Communication Design, and Media. Students develop skills with a range of Art media, but also learn how to develop ideas and make artworks in response to these. They also write about and analyse the artworks of others, and this links to image analysis skills used in English, Media and History. Art can be pursued at a tertiary level through Visual Arts degrees and TAFE certificates. Studying Art at school will assist students in developing folios for entry into design courses such as Graphic Design; Interior Design; Fashion Design and Industrial Design, and can lead to careers in a wide range of Visual Arts related careers such as art curatorship, art conservation and exhibition design.
