Curriculum updates in preparation for the 2026 school year are currently underway and will be complete by Monday July 28 2025
Year 10 must students undertake either Maths or Maths A studies as Core Curriculum.
The college offers TWO (2) Maths courses at Year 10:
10 Maths – General Pathway
10A Maths – Methods Pathway, SEAL
All year 10 students undertake either 10 Maths or 10A Maths, however SEALP students will ALL undertake the 10A Maths option.
These courses cover the Year 10 and Year 10A Victorian Curriculum comprehensively. Each course is designed for students to achieve success in Year 10 and to offer them the best possible preparation for the Mathematics they will do in Year 11.
Students will be placed in 10 or 10a maths based on their Learning Task results in year 9 Maths. They will be informed via email in early term 3 which subject they have been placed in. Students who wish to study a subject other than the one they have been placed into should arrange a meeting with the Head of Maths (Eliza Cole) to discuss actions they would need to take in order to undertake their chosen course of study.
10 Maths – General Pathway
Year 10 Mathematics pathway leads to Year 11 General Maths, followed by Year 12 General Maths. It covers the core content of the Year 10 Victorian Curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on Linear Graphing, Statistics, Measurement, Trigonometry and Financial Modelling.
10A Maths – Methods Pathway
Year 10A Mathematics leads to Year 11 Specialist Maths and Year 11 Maths Methods. Students can also decide to enter the General/Further Maths pathway if they choose. This is the most challenging Maths course as there is a strong emphasis on algebra skills and problem solving. This course covers the core content of the Year 10A Victorian Curriculum as well as components of the Year 10 curriculum. This course is designed for students aiming for courses such as Engineering and Science which require the Maths Methods pathway as a prerequisite.
Mathematics prerequisite for University Courses
There are many tertiary courses that require Mathematics. Some examples are Nursing, Business Studies, Teaching, Information Technology, Engineering, Science and Biomedicine.
Different courses require different Mathematics prerequisite subjects – it’s important to check and know which prerequisites you need.
The VTAC Year 10 Guide website is also a useful resource for checking course requirements.
