Students will consolidate and extend their communication skills, intercultural knowledge and language awareness through a study of one of the two languages offered at Brunswick Secondary College - Italian or Chinese. This will be achieved through the study of topics and tasks including travel and future plans, recounting past events, following and giving instructions and exchanging opinions. Assessment will include written and oral creative tasks, summaries, written and aural comprehension tasks, pair work activities, role-play, and research including using ICT, literature study and regular vocabulary and grammar tests. There will be an emphasis on skill development for the senior years including an end of unit examinations and regular tasks under SAC condition.
Language Pathway
Year 10 Language study is recommended for students who have completed at least three years of consecutive language study from Years 7 to 9. It is not a beginner’s class, and is therefore not suitable for students with no previous formal or informal experience or knowledge of the language. In Year 10, Language students study a range of topics and complex grammar with special emphasis on developing the four skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. Studying a language is not only an advantage for future work and travel, it also improves student’s understanding of the structure of their native language. Students considering studying Language in Year 10 should be able to demonstrate the following basic skills in Italian or Chinese:
Listen to dialogues in the Target Language and identify main ideas.
Express ideas using familiar structures.
Write answers to questions using some complex structures
Read texts with good pronunciation.
Identify main ideas in texts.
Write 2 – 3 linked paragraphs using some complex structures.
Year 10 Languages is a direct pathway to VCE Units 1 & 2 Language.
