Holocaust

In line with the Department of Education mandate that all students study the Holocaust, all Year 10 students will undertake a unit examining the Holocaust at the beginning of Term 1 before beginning their chosen Humanities subject.

Additionally, students choose to complete two Humanities subjects from the following described below:

Geography

Students will explore Human Wellbeing in an unequal World. Human Wellbeing looks at what humans need to access to live happy and healthy lives. A range of case studies will be investigated looking at the causes and impacts of these differences due to environmental, political, economic and social factors. How Human Wellbeing is being improved will be studied with international examples like the United Nations and Doctors without Borders and national examples like the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Geography Pathway

Assessment will include research, analysis and evaluation of case studies/scenarios, ICT supported presentations and tests including an end of semester exam. There will be an emphasis on skill development for the senior years including some assessed tasks completed under SAC conditions. This subject addresses the Civics and Citizenship, and Geography domain of the Victorian Curriculum.

History

Students will analyse the impact of three areas of study that have contributed to the shaping of the modern world. These include an exploration of the First World War, Second World War, and the impact of migration on modern Australia. The three depth studies provide students with a rich and engaging exploration of some of the key developments in Australian and global history in the modern period, particularly experiences of war and the emergence of multiculturalism. Students will develop their historical thinking skills through the use, analysis and evaluation of primary and secondary sources across all three depth studies. Assessment will include elements of source analysis and evaluation, research, and inquiry. There will be an emphasis on skill development for the senior years, including some assessed tasks completed under SAC conditions and an end of unit examination.  The subject addresses the History domain of the Victorian Curriculum, and will prepare students for VCE History.

History Pathway

Year 10 History is an extension of curriculum covered in Humanities Years 7 to 9 and leads to VCE History Units 1 & 2 (Twentieth Century Modern history) and Units 3 & 4 (Revolutions). History develops fluent, concise and well-structured written expression, research skills and provides students with the ability to express complex ideas, synthesising a range of evidence and perspectives. History can be studied further in a range of tertiary degrees, such as arts, international relations and teaching. It can lead to careers in fields such as historical research, teaching and archaeology.

Politics & Law

In this subject students will explore the jurisdictions of the Victorian Court Hierarchy, powers of Victoria Police, role of the jury and sanctions given to convicted criminals. Learning will be enhanced with visits to civic institutions such as the Magistrates’ Court and Victorian Parliament. Students will learn about the key features and values of Australia’s political system. They will explore Australia’s roles and responsibilities as contributors to climate change. Students will evaluate the role of the High Court in making decisions on key cases and investigate how international obligations increasingly shape Australian law and policies. Assessment will include research reports, essays, tests, case studies, ICT supported presentations and an end of unit examination. This subject addresses the Civics and Citizenship domain of the Victorian Curriculum and will prepare students for VCE Politics  and Legal Studies subjects.

Politics and Law Pathway

Year 10 Politics and Law builds on the civics component of curriculum covered in Humanities Years 7 - 9 and is an introduction to the VCE subjects Politics and Legal Studies. Key skills include research, interpretation and analysis, formulating and expressing opinions, short answer and extended written responses and teamwork. Each of these skills can be applied not only to Politics and Legal Studies, but are also transferable to History, Business Management, English and Literature studies. At a tertiary level, Politics and Law students can consider a vast range of degrees, including arts, public relations, teaching, international relations and media.

Commerce: Business Management, Accounting and Economics

Year 10 Commence is an introduction to the core components of VCE Business Management and Accounting incorporating the Victorian Curriculum of Economics and Business. Students will explore business environments and how consumer and financial decisions contribute to the nation. Students will use a simulated business program to actively engage in planning, organising and running a small business and the factors involved in financial planning, profit and loss, and what makes a business viable. Assessment will focus on developing the skills for the senior years, including some assessed tasks completed under SAC conditions and an end of unit examination. Commerce students will develop transferable skills that enable them to be better decision-makers, team player and develop stronger written and verbal skills.

Studies in this area can lead to a broad range of careers such as small business owner, project manager, accountant, human resource manager, operations manager or executive manager. Further study can lead to specialisation in areas such as marketing, public relations and event management.
