In Year 10 English, students will focus on reading, writing and speaking for a variety of purposes. Students will read and respond to texts of various types (such as novels and films) to unpack, explore and analyse the ideas, values and concerns embedded within them by authors. Students will explore how big ideas are explored by authors in different text types, and adapt these conventions to explore their own perspectives in writing. Students will also explore how language can be used to persuade an audience, analysing how this is done by authors, as well as demonstrating their own ability to use persuasive language in written and verbal forms.
Students will be supported with the core skills required at VCE English by studying a range of print and non-print texts. By aligning our year-long course with the requirements of Year 11, we want to encourage deeper thinking and allow for solid preparation for VCE.
Students will also experience a taste of the other English choices on offer at VCE, with sequences of lessons included that explore the content and skills of Year 11 Literature and Year 11 English Language.
For those students embarking on pathways alternative to VCE, we seek to prepare you for life after school by supporting you to become someone who is a critical thinker of what you read in the news and media, someone who is confident to speak in front of others and someone who considers different perspectives on the world before acting.
