BBVG--Lesson-5

Welcome to The Business Behind Video Games!

Warm Up - Call of Duty - Math

Call of Duty 2 - Modern Warfare was the best selling video game in 2009.  What makes them the best?  Well, they grossed an estimated $550 million in sales...in the first five days of release!  COD-MW2 went on to sell well over 15 million copies, and surpass over $1 billion dollars in sales.  (Article)  Ben Fritz, then a reporter at the Los Angeles Times, reported that the game had a production budget between $40 million and $50 million, and a total launch cost — including global distribution and marketing — of $200 million.

Open a fresh Google Doc or Note, and record your answers for the following questions:

If the cost to produce, distribute, and market COD-MW2 totals $200 million, and they sold $1 billion dollars worth of copies, what was their total profit?

If copies of COD-MW2 cost $60 each, and they sold $1 billion dollars worth of copies, how many copies did they sell?

Creating a Main Villain and other Sub-Characters

Creating a main villain can be a driving force in any successful video game franchise.  While a well-developed plot is great, it gets even better when their is conflict on the quest.  Some examples of conflict between Heroes and Villains is shown below:

Mario vs. Bowser (The original was vs. Donkey Kong)            Link vs. Gannondorf

Sub-Characters (aka - Sidekicks)

Everybody likes to have friends.  Especially main characters and villains.

These Subs/Sidekicksare the characters that make up for some of the qualities and traits that your main character might be lacking.  The interactions between main characters/villains and their sidekicks often provides the player with an in-depth look at personalities and can enhance game-play.  Not to mention the fact that Sidekicks contribute many millions of dollars to the franchise as a whole.
