Turning a Movie into a Franchise

Some movies become so popular, that they turn into more movies, and more, and more, until they become a franchise or brand.  Let's look at some of the most successful movie franchises of all time:

Marvel Cinematic Universe - Worldwide Gross: $9,060,537,598 and counting...

Though it seems a bit unfair, the whole of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—which includes The Avengers and Iron Man movies—is officially a single franchise in Hollywood's eyes. Which makes it a tough one to beat, with 12 (and counting) films in the past seven years, led (financially speaking) by The Avengers ($1,519,479,547), The Avengers: Age of Ultron($1,404,705,868), Iron Man 3 ($1,215,392,272), and Guardians of the Galaxy ($771,172,112).

Harry Potter - Worldwide Gross: $7,726,174,542 and counting...

The big-screen incarnation of J.K. Rowling’s boy wizard has proven to be just as profitable as the book version. Since 2001, eight movie adaptations have been released, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. While nearly all of them have approached the $1 billion mark, the series’ most recent entry, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, brought in the biggest profit, with a worldwide take of $1,341,511,219.

Star Wars - Worldwide Gross:  $8,645,004,599 and counting...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has just crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, while becoming the #1 movie of 2017 in the U.S. The Last Jedi grossed $220 million its opening weekend, the second-biggest domestic opening of all-time behind only The Force Awakens. The film continued ruling the box office over the Christmas holiday, grossing $99 million in the four-day window. Projections have The Last Jedi finishing in the top 5 all-time worldwide. Despite huge numbers for The Last Jedi, 2017 box office totals overall are down from 2016.

Going into its fourth weekend, The Last Jedi sits as the third highest-grossing Star Wars movie ever, behind TFW and Rogue One. Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977 set the template for all blockbusters to come, grossing a then-staggering $307 million. Star Wars has continued ruling the box office across all its seven sequels and one standalone film. Even the prequels, maligned as they are by critics and fans, made huge bank in their day. The franchise as a whole has now grossed almost $8.7 billion worldwide.

Others include:

Lord of the Rings

James Bond

The Hunger Games

Indiana Jones

Fast and the Furious

Transformers

Pirates of the Caribbean

Batman

Developing a Brand - Wearable Merchandise

As movies and plots gain popularity, their characters will too.  Part of building and developing a brand is increasing the popularity of characters through the use of wearable merchandise.  Think of all the types of wearable merchandise that surround us each day.  Hats, Shirts, pants, watches, earrings, backpacks, etc.  Each one of these wearables is an ADVERTISEMENT and helps to build the brand's popularity.  Ironically enough, we usually PAY for these items...that means we as customers are PAYING to advertise THEIR PRODUCT.  Hmmmm.....

Assignment - Create Wearable Merchandise for your movie.  Focus on the main character and main villain for this project.  Keep the following in mind as you create your designs on your iPad:

Some examples of wearables are shown below:
