Area Median Income Calculation

Purpose: Calculate HUD's Area Median Income (AMI) category for cases.

Cost: There is no cost to use this module. Search the Admin page on your site for "AMI" to determine if it is enabled. If not enabled, file a ticket from your site requesting it (Help menu > Support Request).

Note: This is a different feature than Median Income, which some states have. The similar names are not our fault.

Setup

Setting up AMI requires two steps:

1. Placing the AMI Poverty Category block on the desired form(s).

2. Entering values in one or more AMI tables on the Admin > AMI page.

Notes on Block Placement

AMI category is calculated by the block by comparing the matter's county of residence and total income to the AMI tables on the site.

Therefore to get the calculated default, the block needs to be on a form after county of residence and income have been saved. The block is typically placed on an intake form, and an auxiliary form for editing/recalculation after a case is opened.

The Admin > AMI page

In filling out the table, the columns indicate the household size. The values you enter should be the upper end of the range. For example, if the annual limit for a household of 1 is $16,000 to be under 30% of Area Median Income, then the first field should have $16,000 listed.

Reports

Case Data > AMI Category [Lookup] > AMI Category.

API Option

If the HUD Area Median Income API is configured, the AMI Poverty Category block gets a checkbox in its configuration to "Use HUD Median Income API". When this is selected, it will set the AMI Poverty Category as a result of the API calculation. Note that this is happening as a result of the percentage, so in locations where the standard is not at 30%, 50% or 80%, the selections made will not be accurate. The AMI Poverty Category block needs to come after the HUD Median API block.
