THE LAMP
In Lamp, A. Rashid Ngah paints a poignant picture of struggle, hope, and resilience. The poem captures the symbolic and literal essence of a lamp as a source of light, knowledge, and inspiration, especially in the face of darkness. Through the lamp, the poet portrays the theme of perseverance how even a single flame can illuminate one's path amidst hardships.
As a reader, I am struck by the dual symbolism of the lamp. It represents both physical light and inner guidance, suggesting that in times of despair, we must rely on our inner strength to continue moving forward. Ngah’s imagery evokes a sense of warmth and comfort, but also fragility, as a lamp’s flame can be easily extinguished, mirroring the delicate nature of hope. This balance of strength and vulnerability resonates deeply, reminding us of our own struggles and the need to protect our ambitions and dreams as one would shelter a fragile flame from the wind.
The poem leaves me reflecting on how I respond to my challenges, urging me to embrace resilience while also acknowledging my vulnerabilities. Lamp speaks to the human spirit's ability to hold onto hope and resilience, even when surrounded by uncertainty, a message that is both universal and personally inspiring.
