SDG 15: Life on Land
Justification : This goal, therefore, calls for action to ensure that protection, restoration, and sustainable use of the terrestrial ecosystem are paramount. The overexploitation of animals and insects contributes much to the loss of biodiversity and degradation of habitats that upset ecological balance and affect human welfare. Such problems need to be resolved in order to safeguard biodiversity and land use in a sustainable manner.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Justification : This goal advocates for sustainable consumption patterns and reducing waste. The exploitation of animals for food often leads to overconsumption and unsustainable agricultural practices that harm ecosystems. Promoting responsible consumption can help mitigate these impacts by encouraging plant-based diets or sustainable animal farming practices.
Overall Decline: Insect populations have declined by approximately 45% over the last 40 years, according to a meta-analysis of 16 studies. This decline poses significant threats to ecosystems and agriculture, as insects are crucial for pollination and nutrient cycling.
Specific Species Declines:
Over 50% of the world’s butterfly populations have died in the past decade.
Nearly 50% of all beetles and bees are also facing significant declines.
Dragonfly populations have decreased by 35%, while about 25% of fly species have vanished.
Endangered Status: About 41% of global insect populations are currently declining, with one-third classified as endangered. The extinction rate for insects is reported to be eight times faster than that of mammals, birds, and reptiles 2.
Global Impact on Food Production: Insects pollinate around 75% of global crops, a service valued at nearly $600 billion, highlighting their importance in food security
