THE SHORT STORY
Planning and preparing for the micro-teaching session required a lot of time and effort. My partner and I spent about one week drafting our lesson plan, selecting the short story, and preparing our teaching materials. Even though we had enough consultation time, most of our time was spent deciding on the short story, selecting the specific SDG, and creating engaging activities. Despite these challenges, we managed to complete everything on time. However, in future sessions, I would allocate more time to refining activities to ensure greater student engagement.
Overall, I am fairly satisfied with my micro-teaching session, although I recognize that there were a few mistakes that need improvement. I was able to deliver the lesson effectively and engage students in discussions about the short story. However, our lesson objectives were not aligned with the activities. It teaches me to be more careful when designing a lesson plan with clear lesson objectives. The students were engaged and participated actively, which made me feel that the lesson was effective.
If I had the chance to redo this lesson, I would make several improvements. Firstly, I would refine my questioning techniques to encourage deeper discussions about the short story. I realize that my questioning techniques were not so good. Secondly, I would refine the lesson plan with lesson objectives that are aligned with the activities that we are doing. Lastly, for the part that I asked about the characters of the short story, I would provide a worksheet about the character to measure the students' understanding of the short story.
One of the strong aspects of my lesson was its effective integration of SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities into The Necklace. The activities encouraged students to think beyond the storyline and relate the theme of inequality to real-life situations. Additionally, student engagement was high throughout the lesson. The interactive discussions and final creative activity allowed them to participate actively and express their thoughts. I also made sure to move around the classroom, interact with each group, and provide guidance, which helped maintain their focus. However, there are areas where my lesson could be improved, particularly in promoting sustainable thinking. While students understood how inequality was portrayed in the story, I could have incorporated more real-world examples of modern social inequalities to deepen their understanding. Additionally, the final activity could have included a brief reflection session where students shared how their character redesigns addressed inequality in a long-term and sustainable manner. This would have encouraged them to think critically about lasting solutions to inequality rather than just short-term fixes.
During my micro-teaching session, my peers were attentive and actively participated in the lesson. Their non-verbal feedback, such as nodding and maintaining eye contact, showed that they were engaged and following the lesson. The verbal feedback I received was mostly positive. My peers mentioned that my voice was clear and loud enough for everyone to hear, which helped in maintaining their attention. They also appreciated how the lesson connected The Necklace to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, making it more meaningful and relevant. However, they suggested that I should provide more open-ended questions to encourage deeper discussions. Other than that, I should learn to control my nervousness since I speak too fast, which makes it difficult for them to understand what they need to do.
Overall, I am pleased with how my microteaching session went. Despite some challenges, I was able to deliver the lesson effectively and engage my peers in meaningful discussions. The activities allowed them to understand the key themes of The Necklace while also exploring the importance of SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. Seeing their active participation reassured me that the lesson was well-structured and impactful. This experience has helped me grow as a teacher by highlighting both my strengths and areas for improvement. I have learned the importance of time management, lesson structure, and incorporating thought-provoking questions to enhance student engagement. Additionally, I now understand how literature can be a powerful tool to promote sustainable thinking and social awareness.
Moving forward, I plan to refine my teaching strategies by including more interactive and reflective activities. I also aim to integrate SDGs more effectively into my future lessons, ensuring that students not only develop language skills but also become socially conscious individuals. This session has strengthened my passion for teaching, and I am excited to continue improving and creating meaningful learning experiences for my students.
