My partner and I spent two weeks planning our microteaching session. The process involved selecting an appropriate short story, drafting the lesson plan, and getting Miss Thina’s approval. Fortunately, our lesson plan was approved without any modifications, allowing us to focus on preparing teaching materials. We took a gradual approach, completing all materials two days before the microteaching day, ensuring that we had sufficient time to rehearse and refine our lesson.
For the microteaching session, we were given one hour to conduct our lesson as a pair. I believe this time was sufficient as it provided each of us with 30 minutes to teach. This allocation is particularly relevant in preparing for our practicum, where time management will be crucial. However, I recognize that I exceeded my allocated time, inadvertently reducing my partner’s teaching time. This is an aspect I must refine to ensure a balanced lesson delivery.
I am satisfied with how I conducted my lesson. From the beginning, I aimed to establish a positive and interactive learning environment where students felt engaged and encouraged to participate. I thoroughly explained and discussed the short story, ensuring students understood the content before moving on to the activities. However, I acknowledge that I became slightly draggy at the start, which forced me to rush through the worksheet section. As a result, I unintentionally took some of my partner’s time, which is something I need to work on.
Another area I must improve is my speaking style with students. According to Miss Thina’s feedback, I frequently used the word “right” during my lesson, making it repetitive and noticeable. Moving forward, I will work on diversifying my expressions and incorporating more interactive questioning techniques to maintain an engaging classroom dynamic.
If I were given another opportunity to conduct this microteaching session, I would focus on the following improvements:
✅ Better Time Management – I will ensure that I stay within my allotted time to avoid rushing through critical lesson components. Proper pacing will allow me to deliver content smoothly without affecting my partner’s teaching time.
✅ Improving Speaking & Questioning Techniques – Instead of relying on “right” as a filler word, I will make a conscious effort to vary my questioning strategies and include open-ended questions to foster deeper student thinking.
✅ Enhancing SDG Integration – I acknowledge that our chosen SDG was not strongly reflected in our lesson. In future lessons, I will carefully align my teaching content with SDG goals, ensuring that students grasp the importance of sustainability through real-world applications.
Despite some areas for improvement, I am proud of several strengths in my microteaching session:
⭐ Effective Student Engagement – From the beginning, I was able to establish rapport with the students and keep them engaged. I enjoyed interacting with them and encouraging their participation.
⭐ Strong Explanation & Discussion – I ensured that I covered every aspect of the short story thoroughly and discussed it in depth with the students. My explanation was clear, and I was able to guide them through the content effectively.
⭐ Encouraging Student Involvement – I made efforts to engage students actively in the discussion rather than making it a one-way lecture. This created a more interactive and dynamic classroom atmosphere.
While my lesson had strong points, I also recognize key weaknesses that need improvement:
❌ Time Management Issues – As mentioned earlier, I exceeded my 30-minute time limit, which caused my partner to lose some of her allocated time. This will need better self-regulation and lesson structuring.
❌ Unstructured Progression of Activities – Due to my time mismanagement, I passed out the worksheet before discussing the short story in detail. This disrupted the logical flow of the lesson, but I was able to recover by going over the story after.
❌ Overusing Filler Words (“Right”) – My frequent use of filler words became a habit, and I will actively work on eliminating this repetition by practicing varied speaking techniques.
I am extremely grateful to have had a supportive and cooperative partner throughout this microteaching journey. We worked seamlessly together, shared similar thoughts and opinions, and created a smooth teaching flow. Without her, I would not have been able to execute the lesson effectively.
Miss Thina’s constructive feedback was invaluable in helping me recognize areas for improvement. The verbal and non-verbal feedback from peers also helped me assess my teaching effectiveness. Some peers enjoyed my interaction style, while others pointed out areas where I could improve my pacing and questioning techniques.
Reflecting on my microteaching session, I am satisfied with my performance but also recognize important areas for growth. I am proud of my ability to engage students, explain the lesson content clearly, and create an interactive learning environment. However, I must work on time management, refining my speaking style, and better integrating SDGs into my lessons.
As I prepare for my practicum, I will use this experience as a learning opportunity to enhance my teaching strategies, classroom management, and student engagement techniques. My goal is to become an effective and inspiring educator who can deliver meaningful, well-structured, and impactful lessons.
I look forward to applying these improvements and growing into a better teacher for my students.
In terms of SDG integration, I recognize that my partner and I could have done better in embedding sustainability concepts into our lesson. Our chosen SDG theme was not strongly evident in the microteaching session, and this is something I will consciously improve for my practicum.
In future lessons, I will:
🌍 Select stories and lesson themes that directly align with SDG principles (e.g., gender equality, environmental awareness, social justice).
📚 Incorporate real-world examples and discussions to help students relate SDGs to their daily lives.
💬 Engage students in meaningful conversations about sustainability, encouraging critical thinking and responsible actions.
For my practicum, I aim to ensure that my lessons not only align with academic objectives but also inspire students to think about global sustainability issues.
Overall, this microteaching experience was a valuable stepping stone toward becoming a better educator. It provided me with insights into my teaching strengths, areas for improvement, and key takeaways for my practicum. While I am pleased with my lesson, I acknowledge the importance of continuous improvement and will strive to refine my skills as I progress in my teaching journey.
I am grateful for the opportunity to teach, receive feedback, and reflect on my practice. Moving forward, I am excited to apply these learnings to create more engaging, structured, and meaningful lessons that truly benefit my future students.
