On the 28th of February 2025, I completed my microteaching. It was an insightful and enriching experience that provided me with a clearer perspective on my strengths and areas for improvement as a future educator. Throughout the process, I encountered various challenges, particularly in time management and lesson execution. However, the experience also helped me to understand deeper with the significance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in education, specifically SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.
I worked along with my cooperative partner, Nur Ariffah Binti Amir. Preparing for our microteaching session was indeed a demanding task, as we had to juggle other multiple academic responsibilities. It took us approximately two to three weeks to draft our lesson plan and prepare our materials. However, due to our colloquium taking place just two days before our microteaching session, we finalised our lesson plan and slides the night before. Although we had sufficient consultation time, the most time-consuming aspect was deciding on the short story, specific SDG to focus on, and the ideas of the activities. Despite these challenges, we managed to complete our preparations in time. This experience has taught me the importance of early preparation and time allocation, ensuring that future lesson plans are well-organised and polished ahead of time.
Throughout the teaching experience, I was satisfied with my teaching performance, but I acknowledge that there were minor mistakes that I must improve upon. One key error was the misplacement of an activity in the set induction stage, which should have been in the pre-stage. Additionally, when introducing SDG 10, I should have first assessed students' prior knowledge before providing a brief explanation. Nevertheless, our lesson objectives were clear, and we structured our activities effectively. The first two activities centered on the short story’s content, while the final activity aimed to implement SDG 10 in a creative and engaging way for the students to participate. The engagement and participation from the students indicated that they were able to grasp the lesson, making the overall session productive and meaningful.
If we were given another opportunity to teach during that day, I would refine several aspects of my teaching. Firstly, I would provide a clearer explanation of SDGs before asking students to identify the specific SDG for the lesson. Secondly, I would carefully design the lesson plan to ensure that activities are placed in the appropriate stages of the lesson. Lastly, the final activity, which required students to create a new character to reduce inequalities in the short story, should have been structured more thoughtfully. We should have guided students to avoid stereotypes or biases when designing their characters, ensuring inclusivity and sensitivity to real-world inequalities.
One of my strengths as a teacher is my loud and clear voice projection, which helped maintain students’ attention and ensured they could hear my explanations clearly and effectively. Additionally, I made a conscious effort to walk around the classroom, engage with each group, and check their participation and pronunciation during the reading session. Furthermore, my ability to interact with students during discussions contributed to a more dynamic and engaging lesson.
However, there are areas where I need improvement. I should work on enhancing the introduction of SDG 10 in the pre-stage, as well as designing lesson plans more meticulously to ensure smooth transitions between activities. This will allow for better lesson flow and more effective delivery of key concepts.
During my teaching, my peers, who acted as students, were cooperative and respectful, for which I am truly grateful. Their engagement reassured me that my teaching was effective. Based on their feedback, they enjoyed my lesson and found it engaging, which boosted my confidence. They also provided constructive criticism, which I accepted with an open heart, as it serves as a valuable reference for improving my teaching skills. One key takeaway from their feedback was the suggestion to incorporate more open-ended, opinion-based questions related to both the short story and SDG 10, rather than focusing mainly on reading comprehension questions.
In conclusion, I am proud with my microteaching performance, though I recognise that there is always room for improvement. This experience has been invaluable in identifying my strengths and weaknesses, helping me refine my teaching approach. The feedback received has given me a clearer understanding of what works well and what needs further development. Most importantly, this microteaching reinforced my commitment to integrating SDGs into my future lessons.
By aligning with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, my lesson highlighted the importance of addressing social disparities through literature. By encouraging students to think critically about inequalities in the short story and address them through character development, I aimed to foster awareness and empathy among them. In addition, I plan to incorporate SDGs into my lesson planning during my practicum in April 2025, ensuring that my students not only develop language skills, but also become more socially conscious individuals for their self-development.
This experience has strengthened my passion for teaching and provided me with a solid foundation to build upon. I am eager to continue growing as an educator and implementing meaningful lessons that contribute to my students’ holistic development. I hope for the best for myself in becoming a good educator and role model for my students.
