Planning and executing my micro-teaching session was a challenging yet rewarding experience that allowed me to reflect deeply on my teaching strategies. I spent approximately three days planning and designing my lesson plan, ensuring that every aspect of my lesson was refined for clarity and effectiveness. The extended planning time allowed me to carefully structure my lesson, select appropriate materials, and anticipate potential difficulties students might encounter. Throughout the refinement process, I made several adjustments to enhance the lesson’s flow and coherence. Although the time spent was more than sufficient, it also highlighted the complexity of lesson planning, where continuous improvement is always possible.
Reflecting on my micro-teaching experience, I feel satisfied with my ability to explain the lesson clearly. I was able to elaborate on the key literary elements of the short story with clarity, ensuring that my students understood the content. However, I noticed that the lesson lacked excitement and enthusiasm, which resulted in low engagement from some students. While my explanations were structured and well-organized, the delivery lacked energy, making it difficult to sustain students' interest throughout the session. This realization made me understand the importance of not only delivering content effectively but also making the learning experience engaging and interactive.
If given another chance to conduct my micro-teaching, I would make several improvements to enhance student engagement. One of the primary changes I would implement is incorporating more creative teaching strategies to make the lesson more exciting. Since many students do not naturally enjoy literature, it is crucial to find ways to captivate their interest. This could include using multimedia elements, storytelling techniques, or even interactive activities that encourage participation. Additionally, I would focus on improving my verbal fluency by reducing stuttering and grammatical errors. These small but significant improvements would contribute to a more confident and compelling lesson delivery.
Despite the challenges, my lesson had several strengths that I am proud of. One of the highlights was the selection of the short story, which intrigued most students due to its thrilling and eerie elements. The suspense and excitement within the story captured their attention, making it easier for them to relate to the literary elements discussed. Moreover, my ability to explain and elaborate on these elements with clarity was another strength, as my peers acknowledged that the lesson was well-structured and easy to understand. These strengths reinforced my belief that content clarity is one of the key components of effective teaching. However, weaknesses in my lesson were evident, and my peers' responses further confirmed these areas for improvement. While some students were engaged and even asked questions, others showed signs of disinterest, such as talking to their friends or appearing sleepy. This highlighted the need for a more dynamic and interactive approach to teaching.
An essential aspect of lesson planning is integrating insights from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In our lesson, we incorporated SDG 3, which focuses on good health and well-being. The short story "Lamb to the Slaughter" aligns with this goal as it provides an opportunity to discuss themes related to mental health, emotional well-being, and the consequences of unchecked emotions. By analyzing the psychological aspects of the characters and their actions, students could reflect on the importance of mental well-being and the societal impact of emotional instability. This integration not only enhanced the depth of our lesson but also allowed students to connect literature with real-world issues, making the lesson more meaningful and thought-provoking.
Overall, while I am satisfied with how smoothly the lesson flowed, I recognize that enthusiasm and excitement are crucial factors in maintaining student engagement. Moving forward, I will strive to balance clarity with engagement, ensuring that my lessons are both informative and stimulating for all students. This experience has been an invaluable learning opportunity, helping me refine my teaching approach for future lessons.
