Participating in the SDG Exhibition was a rich and enlightening experience. In being at the booth representing SDG 1: No Poverty, I was invigorated to spread information about this significant issue affecting the world. The work of preparing the material and dealing with the public increased the knowledge I have about the issue of poverty and the work that goes into fighting it. It was gratifying to observe the public interact with the exhibit and discuss their opinion about the issue. The experience also underscored the need to tackle the issue of poverty at the community scale.
Visitors responded well to the effort made to raise the issue of SDG 1. Many of them shared their insights regarding the issue of poverty and the potential solutions that could work, enriching the debates even more. I also learned about various approaches to fighting poverty by engaging with them. Knowledge-sharing was well facilitated by the exhibition, with the added delight of witnessing individuals interested to learn about the issue of poverty.
Before attending the exhibit, the visitors had a very minimal knowledge of the SDGs. However, by scanning the infographics and the posters, they had a much greater knowledge about the SDG 1 and the impact of the issue of poverty at the international level. They were shocked the most by the magnitude of the issue and the measures being implemented to combat the issue. The exhibit made them consider the ways they could work to combat the issue of poverty at the communal level. To help pre-service teachers like me to include the inclusion of SDGs into their teachings, the B.ED TESL program needs to provide increased training on sustainable education. It can include story-telling sessions, SDG-project work, and outreach to the community. Having pre-service teachers plan lessons incorporating SDG themes will render the sustainable education practical and effective. With training, prospective educators will have the confidence to instruct the next generation about the challenges of the world and empower them to act upon them.
