Participating in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) exhibition was a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of global health challenges, particularly those related to mental health. Our group focused on SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, emphasizing mental health—a critical yet often overlooked component of overall health. We selected the poem "A Chance of Understanding" by G. Tyler to anchor our message, believing it encapsulated the essence of mental health struggles and the need for empathy. Through interactive activities such as the "Balloon Pop Quiz" and the "Unheard Feelings and Thoughts" writing exercise, we engaged visitors in meaningful conversations about mental well-being. This experience not only enhanced my appreciation for the importance of mental health but also underscored the power of creative expression in fostering empathy and understanding.
The journey began with meticulous planning. Recognizing the sensitivity surrounding mental health topics, we aimed to create an exhibit that was both informative and engaging. Our objectives were to:
Educate visitors about the importance of mental health as integral to SDG 3.
Foster empathy through literary expression.
Encourage self-reflection and open dialogue about mental well-being.
To achieve these goals, we designed interactive activities and curated materials that would resonate with a diverse audience.
Exhibition Activities
Balloon Pop Quiz
We introduced an interactive "Balloon Pop Quiz" to engage visitors actively. Each balloon contained a question related to mental health facts displayed on our posters. This activity served multiple purposes:
Interactive Learning: Visitors actively participated, reinforcing their understanding of mental health topics.
Visual Engagement: The colorful balloons attracted attention, drawing more visitors to our booth.
Collaborative Atmosphere: Visitors often discussed questions among themselves, promoting peer learning.
This approach aligns with educational strategies that emphasize active participation to enhance knowledge retention.
Unheard Feelings and Thoughts
Our second activity, "Unheard Feelings and Thoughts," provided a reflective space for visitors to anonymously write down emotions or thoughts they had not shared elsewhere. This activity aimed to:
Provide Catharsis: Allowing individuals to express suppressed feelings can be therapeutic.
Raise Awareness: Highlighting the prevalence of unspoken struggles emphasized the need for open conversations about mental health.
Create a Supportive Environment: Displaying these anonymous notes fostered a sense of shared experience and community.
This activity underscored the importance of acknowledging and addressing mental health issues, aligning with global efforts to reduce stigma.
The response from visitors was overwhelmingly positive. Many were intrigued by the theme of mental health awareness, as it is a topic that resonates with almost everyone in different ways. Our first activity—the "Balloon Pop Quiz"—was particularly engaging. Visitors enjoyed the thrill of popping balloons to reveal questions related to our exhibition posters. This method encouraged active participation, as visitors had to refer to the information displayed to answer correctly. The interactive nature of this activity kept them engaged while reinforcing key facts about mental health.
The second activity—"Unheard Feelings and Thoughts"—was especially powerful. Many visitors expressed that they found comfort in writing down their emotions anonymously, as it gave them an opportunity to acknowledge their feelings without judgment. Some even mentioned that this was a therapeutic experience, as they had thoughts they never dared to express openly. This activity made our booth a safe space where visitors felt understood and valued.
Overall, the visitors' engagement and their enthusiastic feedback proved that our exhibition successfully raised awareness about mental health while encouraging open discussions on emotional well-being.
Participating in this exhibition was enlightening. It reinforced the notion that mental health is a universal concern, transcending age, culture, and background. The experience taught me several valuable lessons:
Empathy is Crucial: Understanding and acknowledging others' mental health struggles fosters a supportive community.
Interactive Education is Effective: Engaging individuals through interactive methods enhances learning and retention.
Open Dialogue is Necessary: Providing platforms for people to express their feelings can alleviate the burden of unspoken struggles.
The SDG exhibition was more than an academic exercise; it was a profound journey into understanding and advocating for mental health. By combining educational content with interactive activities, we created a space that was both informative and therapeutic. This experience has inspired me to continue promoting mental health awareness and to integrate these lessons into future initiatives aimed at achieving holistic well-being for all.
