Weekly Reflection
The aim of this week's session was to take a look at drum miking techniques and phasing. Having prior experience with drum recordings both in a live and studio environment, it was quite a challenge to learn anything new in this week's lesson. At most times, I was a supporting guide to most of the students, where I was provided with the opportunity to give my opinion on the best mic choices for different parts of the drum kit and why I would choose to use them.
Within this lesson, we reviewed different types of mics, what their polar patterns are, and the different micing positions (X and Y). In addition, we also went through the setup and configuration steps of the C24 studio, which provide us as students with a clear understanding of the signal flow process. Finally, to complete this week's session, we went through mic phasing issues that may occur in both studio and live scenarios and how we would go about resolving them. We also discussed what mic preamp gain switches are and what to do, to check individual mics for pausing.
Overall, in terms of this week's transferable skills, the skillsets which I feel were best reflected were deliberate practice and extensive research. The reason for choosing Deliberate practise was that we had the opportunity to practice setting up drum mics within a studio setting but also evaluate how different microphones could create and affect different sound sources. In further addition, we also had the opportunity to conduct further research on micing techniques outside of lecture hours, which I believe helped many students understand the whole research process in preparation for project 2.

Before working on stems, check the sampling rate.
The term "stereo files" does not imply that the files are in stereo; rather, it denotes that they are interleaved. Flux is a stereo tool that is available as a free plugin. Check if a "stereo file" is indeed a stereo sound with this plug-in. You don't have to split back to mono if it is.
Low frequency wavelengths are physically longer than high frequency wavelengths, which is why we hear them.
Speakers and microphones are both transducers, therefore you could theoretically capture bass and drums with speakers.
When employing more than one microphone, you run the danger of phase issues. The problem of phasing is eliminated or reduced by using X/Y miking.
Use a reference and a mono button at all times, and never mix on headphones, the use of the phase reverse button on protools reverses the polarity of the incomming signals.
