Within this trimester, we, as AUD175 students, had the opportunity to learn the different ways in which sound is measured but also a really important skill, which is the way in which rooms and studios can be acoustically treated to create better sounding recordings and projects. These were slightly new skills for me, which I was glad to be able to learn because it will allow me to apply these newly learned skills in a real-life context and scenario.
An example whereby sound measurements and acoustic treatment can be used is while acoustically treating my own home and personal studio. Using the treatment methods taught, the skillset can be applied to reduce the reverberation time that takes place within a studio setting. Furthermore, to enable us as students and future audio engineers to understand whether our acoustic treatment skills are successful or not, we could use SPL measurements to measure the reverb and decay times present in a recoding space prior to treatment vs post.
In terms of my skills and transferable skills both learnt and developed during this 2nd trimester, I feel that it was a great reflection of self-reflection, time management, and creativity. How these three skills have been reflected and developed throughout this trimester has been through the constant application of the content learnt to real-life tasks. With regards to reflective practices and time management, how it was reflected was through the constant request for feedback from my lector on what his expectations were for both learning journals and project submission.
This was an informative unit and one in which I could say I learnt a new set of skills during this trimester that I wasn't fully aware of. In further addition, it was also one of the only units in which I felt that I was allowed to truly succeed through support and reflection/constructive feedback constantly provided.
With regards to the next and final trimester in Dubai, the skillsets on which I feel I could work and improve are reflective practice and learning journal content. In future units, I will look to ensure that I keep consistency with the weekly reflective practices in terms of adding interactive media and relatable readable materials.
To ensure these skills and set of action points are successfully met and developed, I will look to meet with my lector on a 15-day basis to receive feedback and understand where I sit within the overall hospital grading scheme. These steps will require me to stay on task at all times.
In terms of the overall assessment guide and grading for this unit, I believe I should be able to achieve an HD grade. Despite the delayed first three weeks, I consistently felt I was able to stay on task and regularly ask for feedback and apply improvements. In further addition, I was also able to submit and present both my learning journals and project submissions within the given time frame. Another reason why I believe I should be able to achieve a high distinction grade in this unit is since I have been able to continually reflect on my work every week by asking for in-class feedback from my lecturer and my peers, and then acting on the feedback provided.
