The idea behind this project was to recreate "Angels" by Robbie Williams through the use of live recorded and electronic instruments. To achieve this, I underwent an in-depth research process to help me understand the different parts of the original track that it contains and how I could replicate those with my style. I also researched the DAW Protools and logic, as this is what I used to complete this project.
Throughout the project's duration, I felt, and continue to feel, that several different components made massive changes to the overall project. For example, in the beginning, the recording techniques used to capture the live instruments, such as drums and vocals, were essential, as within this step of the process we were required to ensure that our recordings were of the best quality possible. Furthermore, I think that what went well was the timing and scheduling of this project. This project was very time-consuming and required us to always be on top of studio bookings and the whole production process to not miss deadlines and submissions.
At first, it was a challenge to understand how the different features within Protools worked, as I was not used to the DAW. In addition, it was a great experience to learn how to work and record within the C24 studio facilities. Despite it being a challenging process when it came to the editing and mixing parts of the project, I thought that it was a great experience. If I was to repeat this project, I would attempt to do a track which would involve recording instruments to enable me to experience different recording techniques.
My next steps upon submitting my project will be to wait for feedback to be provided and to follow through to create an action plan that will allow me to improve for future submissions. For future projects, I will also try and ensure a continuous feedback process from my teacher to allow me space for improvements and enhancements in my project production process. For future projects, I also feel I could improve by trying to stick to the same DAW throughout. Due to licensing issues that arose, I was unable to mix my final project on Protools.
In terms of the transferable skills which I feel can be reflected on and demonstrated within this project, they are self-practice, time management, problem-solving, and creativity. The reason why I feel that self-practice, time management, and creativity were a huge part of this project is that we, as students, were required to work independently to manage our own time leading up to the project submission, but at the same time, we also had the opportunity to practice and develop our audio engineering and mixing skills while having the opportunity to enhance our communication skills when communicating to our peers and receiving feedback. Finally, how I feel that problem solving was a part of this project was through the production process, as we were required to individually come up with solutions to problems encountered within the editing process and also the booked recording studio sessions. Deadlines were a huge part of time management as we had to ensure everything was smooth leading up to the submission date.
