Weekly Reflection (What, So What, Now What, Peer to Peer Feedback & Transafarable Skills)?
How can the relationship of text or culture change the way we feel about art?
Culture influences an artist's work by shaping the artist's worldview and associations with color, shapes, patterns, symbols, people, places, and things.
In terms of this week's pre-class activites, the aim was to find a way in which we can bring originality to our projects. Below, I have inserted two images that were taken off the AIM110 unit site whereby I have re-phrased the set descriptions given to provide it with my original feel and understanding. As a pre class activity i was also required to define the diffrent terminology in relation to intertextuality, my findings and understaing are as folows:
An allusion is an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.
A group of words taken from a text or speech and repeated by someone other than the original author or speaker.
The process of translating words or text from one language into another (or from one context to another)
A Pastiche is an artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work, artist, or period.
A parody is an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.
Homage is a special honor or respect shown publicly
There were very few actual photographs of outer space until recently. Most of us have no firsthand knowledge of space, but we believe we know exactly what "outer space" looks like. It is a part of our collective cultural knowledge. We imagine star systems, galaxies, nebulae, and a seemingly infinite number of alien species and spaceships. Many people have gone (bravely) into space, and we have traveled with them. Our experience of outer space, however, is entirely mediated, and in most cases creatively mediated. Whatever we've seen of space is because someone made a decision about what to show us.
As a result, our understanding of outer space is comprised of a plethora of texts (that is, media content). These texts continue to expand and refine our understanding of what life is like in space.
In terms of this week's lecture, I personally found the topic of intertextuality quite challenging and difficult to understand. The reason for this is that, at the beginning, I was unable to link it to my project and understand how I was going to apply the information learnt to the context of project three. However, upon taking my own time out after the lecture and reading into intertextuality, I understood that the way in which it links to our project three is the way in which different people understand the emotions being communicated through the use of an image or painting. It was interesting to learn how the use of different colours can communicate different emotions, scenarios, and expressions.
As an additional learning step and an above-and-beyond action, I decided to also read into the way in which different colors can represent different feelings and emations. From what I read, I was able to learn that lighter textural colors are able to communicate and influence happier emotions, while on the other hand, darker colors express the emotions of fear and distress.
In terms of moving forward to week 11 and with project three, my next steps are to understand and select the colors that I will be using for project three. My aim for project three is to express the emotional feelings of confusion and distress. As per my current research point and method, I should be looking to use a darker choice of colors. In terms of future steps, I think I will do as follows: in the instance that I don't understand a taught in-class topic, I will contact my lecturer and ask for support in terms of explaining the content at a deeper level.
Despite the challenges faced in terms of understanding the content taught in this week's lecture, I still think it was quite beneficial and a positive experience. In terms of this week's transfarabel skills, I believe that the only skill that can be refelcted is cognative outsorcing. The reason why I chose this transferable skill was due to the fact that I had to outsource solutions to learn the content despite not understanding what was going on. It was great learning about intertextuality and the way in which this topic and the choice of imagery representing project three will influence the emotions being communicated. In my opinion, I personally think I will be looking to use darker and warmer colors throughout my visual content in project three to best represent the emotion of fear.
