What...
During this weeks lecture, we were required to understand how to use and apply reverb and delay effects to a project using protools and the audient console. At the beginning of this week’s lecture, I was quite confident using reverb and delay effects sends with a DAW. Reverb and delay are something that I have worked with in the past, therefore, understanding the different parameters within these presets. I found that not all students were as comfortable as I was, therefore, at times, I found that the content being taught was not challenging me as an individual. During this week’s workshop session, we learnt how to use the Lexicon FX unit within a studio setting and also understood the process of recording a live mix from the audient console directly to the protools DAW. In terms of the peer to peer feedback given this week by randy was that we was happy in regards to the consistancy that can be seen within my learning journals but i should try and skill reduce the ammount of classnotes sesions within my jornal entry.
So what...
I personally found this week’s lecture quite interesting and informative as I was not familiar with the lexicon effect units that are present within the SAE studios. I personally feel that there is more knowledge and understanding that I am required to develop over the next few weeks when it comes to the signal flow process within a studio environment. The reason why signal flow is something that I require to develop for the future is to enable me to be more coherent when recording with multiple inputs and using different effects units, such as delay, compression and reverb.
Now what...
In order to further develop my knowledge of signal flow within a studio environment my next steps are to with Randy and book a consultation session for him to further explain the different parts, steps and processes that are required in order to use the effect units and other add-ons within the SAE studio setting when using an analogue console. I personally find it easy to work with digital consoles due to prior knowledge and experience however, struggle when working with an analogue settings console. To further enhance my knowledge I will also look to watch YouTube videos on how to route, set up and operate the Audient studio mixer, this step will hopefully strengthen my knowledge of the desk and its signal flow process.
INTRAPERSONAL - The reason for this chosen transferable skill this week was due to my confidence and positive attitude when learning a new skill within a studio environment.
What skills are you most confident with? What skills do you know you need to improve in? Explain.
Upon reflecting of this week’s learnt content, I personally feel that I am most confident with adding FX sends and returns within a DAW. However, upon reflecting I also understand that I am required to further strengthen my knowledge on signal flow within a studio setting while working with external FX units.
How does failure fit into the creative process? - What do you think can be learnt from not succeeding on the first (or second) attempt?
The benefit of which I personally think failure brings is that it requires us, students, to further research and develop our own skills by ourselves allowing us to fully understand how different features work with a mission environment in the case of today’s lecture. But I also think it allows us to develop our communication skills when we are required to liaise with different students and I’ll lecture to ask questions or bring outstanding points to the table.
Often creative people feel let down when they don't meet their own expectations. Discuss one of your past projects where you may have let yourself down, what can you take away from that experience to positively influence your future projects?
One project which I feel that I personally was let down with this project one for a D176 as I wasn’t able to show my full potential due to the lack of equipment and restrictions project brief mentioned however the way this supported me in developing project two was that the spec then allowed me to undertake a multi-mic recording, allowing me to demonstrate my knowledge and skillset to the best of my ability.
