Willie Johnson

Willie Johnson ( 1923-1995) - was one of Howlin' Wolf's guitarists during the 1950s. Johnson appeared on some of Wolf's most memorable recording for Sam Phillp's Sun Studio between 1951 and 1953. Johnson remained in Memphis after Wolf moved to Chicago in 1954. His playing can be heard on recordings by Roscoe Gordon, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Junior Parker.

Johnson is famous for his heavily distorted tone which characterizes Wolf's Sun recordings. His style involved the use of distorted major and 9th chords intermixed with single string runs. He also used tremolo on some recordings to make his sound even more unique.
