Gatemouth Brown

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (1924-2005) - was a blues guitarist from Louisiana/Texas who spent his career mixing the blues with other styles of American music. His best blues guitar work, in my humble opinion, can be heard on his early recordings for Don Robey's Peacock Label in Houston during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Like his hero, T-Bone Walker, Brown liked to play single string runs and chord fills while singing. Many of his early sides are punctuated by sizzling guitar solos featuring singles string runs mixed with bends and an occasional double stop. It also sounds like he uses a capo on many of his songs - in order to play using the first position E-chord shape.
