Robert Jr. Lockwood
Robert Junior Lockwood (1915-2006) - is one of the most diverse and creative of all the blues guitar players. He played behind such blues greats as Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter and also performed as a solo artist - playing and singing until his death in 2006. I first learned about Lockwood by listening the Chess recordings by Sonny Boy Williamson on which he provides a staggering variety of chords and fills to compliment the playing of the great harpist. Lockwood also played on some of Little Walter's Chess sides. His playing provides a solid vocabulary for any guitarist wanting to learn how to tastefully back-up a harp player.
Just recently, I began listening to Lockwood's solo sides and discovering the remarkable creativity and experimentation in his playing. In particular, his 12-string playing is truly unique.
