Matthew 26:6-13
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, 7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. 9"This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."
10Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
Jesus was at the home of Simon the Leper...Evidently he was healed or he would not be allowed to be part of the community...
Mary was there and had a very expensive alabaster jar of perfume...She poured the expensive perfume on His head...Some of the disciples were indignant, because of the expensiveness of the perfume...Jesus corrects the disciples and reminds them she is doing this to prepare Him for His burial...It is an act of love, giving, and faith...
Mary truly loves Jesus and does this from her heart...Jesus deserves our best and she has given Him her best perfume... Nothing is too good for our Savior...Mary's action proves her feelings and Jesus reminds us this act will be remembered throughout the world...What she did, no one would ever be able to do again, to anoint Him before His death...We must keep in mind, that women in these times were thought of as lesser in society (when compared to men), but Jesus honors this act of kindness (to a woman)...
The disciples also mention that Mary could have given the money to the poor...Jesus does not prioritize acts for helping the poor...He is very clear on helping the poor...But Jesus is reminding us that we will always have the poor, and acts of love, giving to Him, and faith in our Teacher are very, important also..
