1 Peter 2:22-25
Submissive and Humble
22“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”
23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Matthew 26:47-56
Jesus Arrested
47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
He did not retaliate and He made no threats...St. Peter knew (especially, after He seen Him resurrected) what Jesus could do...When I read about this submissiveness of Jesus during His arrest and hours on the cross, it really astounds me...His suffering really came to life for me, in the movie the Passion of the Christ...Imagine, if you can -that you are getting tortured and whipped, and now you are bleeding and suffering greatly...As a man you would have no other course, but to take the beating and die on the cross...But as our Divine Master was getting beaten and tortured, He could do an infinite number of things...At anytime could have stopped it...He could have left the scene (but that would have meant leaving us)...He had any one of His miracles at His very fingertips...I know what I personally, would have done to those flogging and whipping me, if I had His power...But He is Great, and I am not...Because, I (personally) think I might have tried to show those who bore me those sufferings a lesson...
Jesus tells us on the night of His arrest He at anytime could call on His Father for help and a miracle would instantly happen...His Father could send down to Him at the blink of an eye, twelve Legions of Angels to save His physical body from the bleeding, the suffering and His death on the cross...But, He chose not to do this...I must repeat that, He chose not to be helped by God, His Father, as He felt all of His pain...He did not choose the Twelve Legions of Angels to stop His own crucifixion...He did not choose to save Himself...He chose something better (as this selfish sinner writes "something better")...He chose to save us, and by His wounds we have been saved...
