Matthew 22:34-40
The Greatest Commandments
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
When Jesus was asked “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”, it makes us think if there is a top teaching of His...So, by Jesus answering it the way He answers the question, we must believe it is one of His most valuable teachings...And I might have thought this Great Lesson would have been quite lengthy, but this Grand-Great Commandment is a short and easy to understand Commnd of His...
For me Jesus has many top teaching lessons, and this is because He is Divine and many of His lessons about life are the Absolute Truth, the Absolute Way, and the Absolute Way to follow Him in one's own Life...I, also, can certainly believe that His answer about the Great Commandment, as highlighted in Matthew 22:37-39, stands as an undeniably central and arguably the most encompassing lesson in all of Jesus' ministry...It is universally recognized within Christian theology as the foundational principle from which all other commands and teachings flow, serving as the blueprint for life in the Kingdom of God...
Jesus' response to the expert in the law begins with the command to "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." (Matthew 22:37)...This is not a partial or conditional LOVE, but a call to complete, all-consuming devotion...To love God with all your heart means to commit your deepest affections, desires, and emotional core entirely to Him...It speaks to the wellspring of your will and passion...To love Him with all your soul encompasses your entire being, your very life force and identity, dedicating your existence, vitality, and spirit to Him...And to love Him with all your mind requires intellectual engagement, thoughtful consideration, your reasoning powers and the pursuit of understanding His Truth and Wisdom...This comprehensive command demands that every facet of our being—our emotions, our inner life, our thoughts, and our very existence—be directed towards God...It is a call to a relationship of absolute priority and singular focus, echoing the ancient command from Deuteronomy 6:5, emphasizing the centrality of God in every aspect of a believer's life...
Following this, Jesus states the second commandment is "and the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’" (Matthew 22:39)...This immediately connects our vertical relationship with God to our horizontal relationships with humanity, making them inseparable...The term "neighbor" in Jesus' teaching extends far beyond mere proximity or personal affection; it encompasses everyone we encounter, including strangers, those in need, and even our enemies, as explored in other profound lessons...To love our neighbor "as ourselves" is a revolutionary concept; it means extending the same care, respect, empathy, and desire for well-being to others that we naturally extend to ourselves...It calls for practical action, compassion, and a recognition of the inherent dignity of every person, created in God's Image...This command finds its roots in Leviticus 19:18, but Jesus elevates its meaning, making it the practical outworking of Divine LOVE...WE are not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your neighbors, but love your neighbor as yourself...And then God says: I AM the LORD...
This teaching very clearly talks about service and helping others...Specifically, these phrases point directly to that concept: it encompasses everyone we encounter, including strangers, those in need...It means extending the same care, respect, empathy, and desire for well-being to others that we naturally extend to ourselves...It calls for practical action, compassion, and a recognition of the inherent dignity of every person, created in God's Image...The call to "practical action" and focusing on "those in need" are direct references to serving and helping others in tangible ways...
The profound power and ultimate supremacy of these two commandments lie in Jesus' declaration: "All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:40)...This statement reveals that LOVE is not just a commandment, but the Ultimate summary and fulfillment of God's entire revelation...Every law, every prophetic message, every moral instruction in the Hebrew Scriptures can be understood as an extension or application of this core principle of LOVE for God and neighbor...It simplifies the complex tapestry of Divine Instruction into two interwoven threads that define the very nature of righteousness and they are defined by love in both of His Great Commandments...
The two commandments are inextricably linked; one cannot truly exist without the other...Genuine LOVE for God naturally overflows into genuine LOVE for others, for how can one claim to LOVE an invisible God if they do not LOVE the visible people He created in His image?...Conversely, authentic LOVE for neighbor is rooted in and empowered by our LOVE for God, drawing from His Infinite wellspring of Grace and Compassion...This Great Commandment provides the framework for every decision, every interaction, and every pursuit in the Christian life, making it the guiding principle for living a life that truly reflects God's character and fulfills His Divine Purpose for humanity...
In essence, the Great Commandment serves as the foundational cornerstone of Christian ethics and spirituality...It is a Divine call to Holistic and Sacred LOVE—a LOVE that transforms our relationship with God, reshapes our interactions with others, and reorients our entire existence...It is the perfect summary of all that God requires and the ultimate expression of what it means to live in the Presence of His LOVE...
