Luke 7:18-35
Jesus Talking to John the Baptist's Messengers
18 John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them,19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:
“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’
28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not cry.’
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Matthew 24:30-35
Jesus Says His Words Will Never Pass Away
30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
The author Walt Whitman said this about how we ought to live our lives and they were wise words...“This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”...
Jesus was always helping people when He dwelt the earth...Jesus told John the Baptist disciples what He had been doing on earth and how He had been living His life...Jesus said John's disciples should tell John what they had seen and heard: The blind had received sight, the lame could now walk, those who have leprosy were cleansed, the deaf now could hear, the dead were raised, and the good news was being proclaimed to the poor...Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of Him...Then Jesus added “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?...If not, what did you go out to see?...A man dressed in fine clothes?...No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces...But what did you go out to see?...A prophet?...Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet...This is the one about whom it is written: “‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’...I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”...(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John...But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)...Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation?...What are they like?...They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: “‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’...For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’...The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’...But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”...
Both of these men are and were wise...But Jesus has this Divine Wisdom about Him, and true wisdom will be proved right in the end...And Jesus' words will never pass...
