Matthew 25:1-13
Parable of the Ten Virgins
1 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
In the Parable of the Ten Virgins we read about the story of ten bridesmaids waiting for the arrival of the bridegroom...The Bridegroom maybe Jesus...Five of the ten virgins are wise and bring extra oil for their lamps, while the other five are foolish and don't...The five bringing the extra oil are cautious and really do not know what the exact time of the Bridegroom's appearance...When the Bridegroom finally arrives at midnight, the lamps of the foolish virgins run out of oil, leaving them unable to participate in the wedding feast...They beg the wise virgins for some of their oil, but the wise virgins refuse, explaining that there wouldn't be enough for everyone and they would run out of oil what would they do, knowing He has been long in coming...By the time the foolish virgins go off to buy more oil, the doors to the wedding hall have already shut, and they are left outside, unable to enter...They have not prepared and were not ready for the One to come...
The Parable is often interpreted as a reminder to be prepared for the unexpected, particularly the Second Coming of Christ...We must be on guard and on watch and prepared for Hm to arrive at any time...We do not know the hour or the day that He will arrive...The wise virgins represent those who are faithful and ready for Jesus' Second Advent, while the foolish virgins represent those who are neglectful and unprepared...The oil may be seen as a symbol of faith, which is necessary for salvation...
The number ten in the parable may be symbolic of completeness or perfection...The timing of the Bridegroom's arrival at midnight suggests that Jesus' Second Coming may be unexpected or even surprising or He may be a long time in coming...The closed door near the end of the parable emphasizes the importance of being prepared, being ready, and not delaying our repentance...
Being prepared means having a relationship with God on a regular basis with regular prayer, reading the Bible, personal reflection, confessing that we are sinners, and following Jesus Teachings...Being prepared means being more like Jesus...Which means developing qualities like love, forgiveness, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control...These align us more with Jesus...Strive to live a life pleasing to God, marked by purity, integrity, and obedience to His commands...Let us be more Jesus like in serving others and helping those in need and being charitable...And as He tells us in the Great Commission: Let us share our spiritual journey with others and our experiences so others may see the Way, the Truth, and the Light of the Gospel...Let us share our faith with others, inviting them to experience the love and grace of Jesus...
The Parable of the Ten Virgins reminds us that faith and patiently knowing Jesus may come at anytime and being prepared for Him are essential for achieving eternal life...Otherwise, the door maybe shut to Heaven if we have not prepared for Him...
