Так карта вить ласково, нежно и наивно
Самое обычное необычно — дивно?
Все о Вас я думаю, мысленно лаская,

Такое вдруг «разуверенье»,
Над девой занесенный «нож».

Нет, кроме шуток, — «отчего бы, —
Мне скажут, — странный этот взгляд
С оттенком плохо скрытой злобы?»
И — о6ъясниться повелят.

Охотно, милые синьоры,
Охотно, милые mesdames,
Рассею я все ваши споры,
Вам о6ъяснения я дам!

Мой взгляд на женщин есть не личность,
А всеми обобщенный факт:
Не только «этих дам публичность»,
Но и «не этих домный такт»…

Есть непонятные влеченья, —
Живой по-своему ведь жив…
Бывают всюду исключенья,
Но в массе — вывод мой не лжив.

Как ей идет горжетка кунья

Блистальна глаз шатенки прорезь,

Когда в фигурах разузорясь,
Она стремглавит вдоль реки.
Глаза, коньки и лед — все стально,
Студено, хрустко и блистально.
Но кто ж она? но кто ж она?
Омальвенная конькобежка?
Японка? полька? иль норвежка?
Ах, чья невеста? чья жена?
Ничья жена, ничья невеста,
Корнета русского вдова,
Погибшего у Бухареста
Назад, пожалуй, года два,
В дни социального протеста.
Сама не ведая — зачем,
Она бежала за границу
И обреклась мытарствам всем,
Присущим беженцам. Страницу
Пустую жизни дневника
Тоской бесправья испещрила,
И рожа жизни, как горилла,
Ей глянула в лицо. Тоска
Тягучая ее объяла…
О, было много, стало мало
Беспечных и сердечных дней.
Старушка-мать больная с ней,
Отец, измайловский полковник,
И брата старшего вдова
С девизом в жизни: «Трын-трава»
И «каждый ухажер — любовник»…
«О, Гриппе легче жить, чем мне, —
Над ней задумывалась Липа, —
Она не видит слез и всхлипа
И видит лишь фонарь в луне…
Ей не дано в луне планету
Почувствовать, ей не дано…
Ее игривому лорнету
Все одинаково равно,
Будь то луна иль Кордильеры…
И если это не форшмак,
Не розы и не гондольеры,
Какой бы ты там ни был маг,
Ты сердцем Гриппы не омагишь
И перед нею в лужу „лягешь“
И легши, в слезах „потекёшь“…»

Чтоб грамотной была! На стенку
Не лезь, обиженная: тут
Преувеличенного мало…
Не ты одна, поверь, ломала,
Коверкая, родной язык…
Предслышу я злорадный зык
Своих критических кретинов,
Что я не меньше Гриппы сам
Повинен в этой ломке… Гам
Их пустозвончатый откинув,
Им в назиданье преподам
Урок: не лаять скверной моськой
На величавого слона.
Послушай, критика! Ты брось-ка
Вести себя, как девка Фроська:
По существу соль солона!..
И как атласист лоский лацкан
И аморальна «фея тьмы»,
Так критика всегда дурацка:
Над этим думали ведь мы…
О, «девка Фроська»! Просто здесь-ка
Ты символ критики шальной.
Продумай термин мой и взвесь-ка
Его значенье, шут хмельной.
Попутно критике дав бокса,
От темы сильно я отвлекся,
И, Липу с Гриппой позабыв,
Впал в свой излюбленный мотив.
Мне в оправданье то, что силе
Моей мешали эти тли:
О, как они мне насолили!
Как оскорбляли! Поносили!
И довели бы до петли, —
До смерти, — если б дерзновенен
И смел я не был, как орел.
Убил же Надсона Буренин,
Безвременно в могилу свел…
Я не был никогда поклонник
Стереотипного нытья
И сладковатого питья,
Что горестный односторонник,
«Студенческий поручик» вам,
Сородичи, давал! Но сам,

Да, тиф, свирепствовавший в Нарве

Порядочно людей скосил
Слезами горести и скорби.
Его бациллы разносил
Бедняк — в узле, крестьянин — в торбе,
Вагон — в скамейках, по полям
И деревням болтливый ветер…
Тиф только Орро не заметил
И прикоснуться к тополям
Не смел своей гребучей лапой.
Как малярия под Анапой,
Так тиф — под Орро… Без гроша
В кармане Липа, пореша
Спасти родителей от смерти,
Истратив бывшее в конверте,

Ей приносил букеты роз,
А иногда и целый хлебец.
Он был хороший мальчуган,
Шикарь, кокет, поэт немного,
Но он был скользким, как минога,
В нее влюбленный Иоганн…
Его сменил приват-доцент
Гусь-Уткин, с рыжей ражей рожей,
Он ей дарил аршины лент
И туфли с лаковою кожей,
И шоколад, и пепермент…
За этим репортер прохожий
Увлекся Липой, но без крыл
И без бумажника в кармане,
В пустячном, проходном романе
Он ничего ей не дарил…
Была ли Липа с ним близка?
Но не были они ей близки.
Ей эта жизнь была узка:
Грязь, нищета, нужда, тоска
И эти жалкие огрызки…
Немудрено, когда хромой
Сын лавочника, рослый Дмитрий,
Игравший с огоньком на цитре,
К ней начал свататься зимой,
Она без долгих размышлений,
Уставшая от оскорблений,
Метнулась в брачную петлю,
Забыв сказать ему «люблю»…

Eyes, skates and ice – all steel,

Crusty, brilliant and with chill.

The skater mallow?

Polish? Norwegian? Japanese?

Ah, whose bride? Wife of whose?

No one’s wife, no one’s bride,

Widow of Russian cornet,

Dead at Bucharest

Maybe two years ago,

In days of social protest.

Not knowing what for,

She ran across the border

And was subjected to all ordeals,

Made for refugees.

The empty page of life’s diary

She dotted with sorrow’s lawlessness

And, like a gorilla, the face

Of life looked in her face. Embraced

The capricious one ordered the ragamuffin

Не правда ль? — позорно дать руку тому,
Кто гибнет и верит, что можешь помочь ты…
Позорно и скучно, и странно… К чему —
Когда есть «летучие почты»,
Конфетти и шпоры, и танцы, и лесть?

Вот в том-то и ужас, что всё это есть!

Когда же умрёт он — бессильный, больной —
И в церковь внесут его прах охладелый,
Ты плакать, пожалуй, посмеешь!.. Иной
Подумает: «Слёзы души опустелой…»

…Будь я мертвецом, я покинул бы гроб,
Согнул бы законов природы кольцо
И всё для того, для того это, чтоб —
‎Тебе плюнуть в лицо!..

Shameful and boring, and strange… What for –

When there is “flying mail,”

Flattery, and dance, and confetti, and spores?

In it is horror, that all this is!

When he will die – powerless and sick –

And they will carry into the church his cold remains,

You will, perhaps, dare to weep!

Another will think: “Tears of soul emptied…”

Be I a corpse, I would leave the coffin,

Bending the laws of nature’s ring

And all for that, all for this –

To spit into your face!

Я, вдовствующая императрица,
Сажусь на свой крылатый быстрый бриг
И уплываю в море, чтоб укрыться
От всех придворных сплетней и интриг.
Мой старший сын, сидящий на престоле,
И иноземная его жена
В таком погрязли мрачном ореоле,
Что ими вся страна поражена.
Его любовниц алчущая стая,
Как разъяренных скопище пантер,
Рвет мантию его из горностая
Руками недостойными гетер.
Его жена, от ревности свой разум
Теряя, зло и метко мстит ему.
И весь народ, подверженный заразам,
Грузится в похоть, пьянство, лень и тьму.
Им льстит в глаза разнузданная свита,
Куя исподтишка переворот.
О, паутинкой цепкою повита
Интрига та, ползущая в народ.
Ни с кем и ни о чем не сговориться
В стране, пришедшей к жалкому нолю.
Бездействующая императрица,
Спешу уплыть к соседу-королю.

Monologue of the empress

I, dowager empress,

Sit on my quick winded brig

And sail to sea, so as to hide from

All courtiers of gossip and intrigue.

My oldest son, sitting on the throne,

And his wife alien

Got mired in such a dusky halo,

That the land is amazed with them.

The hungry flock of his lovers,

Like an enraged panthers’ crowd,

Tears the mantle of ermine

The gay man with unworthy arms.

His wife, from jealousy losing her reason

Revenges him, evil and precise.

And people, subjected to infection,

Loads into lust, laziness, darkness and drunkenness.

To their eyes flatters retinue unbridled,

Like, on the sly, upheaval.

Oh, wrapped with tight cobweb

Is the intrigue, crawling to people.

Not with anyone about anything come to agreement,

In land, coming to pitiful zero.

The empress dormant.

I hurry to sail to king-neighbour.

Из зависти твердит: «Смотрите,
Ваш Игорь — миг, Ваш Игорь бред;
Он на безвременьи заметен
И то лишь наглостью своей», —
Тогда я просто безответен:
Так хорошо душе моей.
Не всё ли мне равно — я гений
Иль заурядная бездарь,
Когда я точно сад весенний
И весь сплошная светозарь.
Я улыбаюсь безмятежно
Успехам, ругани — всему:
Моё бессмертье неизбежно,
И я спокоен потому.

Очаровательные темы
Меня преследуют весь год.
Но если я «большой» поэмы
Не напишу вовек, пусть тот,
Кто «где же твой Онегин?» ноет,
Вчитается в ту «мелюзгу»,
Какую я даю: «не стоит»
Ещё не значит — «не могу».
В наш век всё длительное немо,
А современному уму
Всё творчество моё — поэма,
Какой не снилось никому.

Так много разных шалопаев
Владеет «мастерски» стихом —
Петров, Иванов, Николаев,
Что стих становится грехом.
Пусть угрожает мне «Удельной»
Любой желающий болван:
Как хорошо, что я — отдельный,
Что Игорь я, а не Иван!

I want to make fun of them.

To successes, swearing – to all:

My immortality is unavoidable,

And I am for this reason calm.

The whole year follow me.

But if the “big” poem

I won’t write for centuries, may he,

Who whines “where is your Onegin?”

Reads “small fry” into that,

Which I read: “Not worth it”

Still does not mean “I can’t.”

All’s long and silent in our time,

And to the contemporary mind

All my creativity – a poem,

Which was not by anyone dreamed.

“Masterfully” the poems own –

Petrov, Ivanov, Nikolayev,

That poem became a sin.

May threaten me with “specific”

Any desiring moron:

Thus it is good that I’m – distinct,

That I am Igor, not Ivan!

Трагичный юморист, юмористичный трагик,
Лукавый гуманист, гуманный ловелас,
На Францию смотря прищуром зорких глаз,
Он тек по ней, как ключ — в одебренном овраге.

Входил ли в форт Beaumonde пред ним спускались флаги.
Спускался ли в Разврат — дышал как водолаз,
Смотрел, шутил, вздыхал и после вел рассказ
Словами между букв, пером не по бумаге.

Маркиза ль, нищая, кокотка ль, буржуа, —
Но женщина его пленительно свежа,
Незримой, изнутри, лазорью осиянна…

Художник-ювелир сердец и тела дам,
Садовник девьих грез, он зрил в шантане храм,
И в этом — творчество Гюи де Мопассана.

As he entered fort Beaumonde before him lowered flags.

He looked, joked, sighed and then told the tale

With words between letters, feather not on paper.

But his lady is captivatingly crisp,

Invisible, by azure from within illuminated…

Artist-jeweler of hearts and bodies of ladies,

He saw temple, the gardener of maidens’ dreams,

And in this – creativity of Guy De Maupassant.
