Ты слышишь, Аллочка, как захрустели шины?
Мы поднимаемся на снежные вершины.
Каттарро ниже все. Все ближе — ближе Ловчен —
Вершина зовкая, какой нет в мире зовче…
Ты в исступлении. Ты плачешь: «Вот где наше!»
И губ гранатные протягиваешь чаши.
«Вдыхай букетики моих мечтаний», — шепчешь,
И прижимаешься ко мне все крепче, крепче…
О, возвышающее вышины изгнанье!
Адриатическое сникло побережье.
Дух изумрудящийся опрозрачен синью.
«Дай мне замерзнуть здесь, — ступай один в Цетинье…»
Пять лет не встретившись, одним дышали вздохом:
Отдать ли смерти то, что собрано по крохам?
Само ведь Счастье едет с нами в экипаже.
Дай губы, Аллочка: тебя нигде нет слаже…
Dalmatian fantasy
You listen, Allochka, how the tire crunched?
We lift to the snowy heights.
Cattarro below everything. All the nearer – nearer till Lovcen –
Loud height, louder than which there is nothing in the world…
You’re in frenzy. You cry: “here is ours!”
And you pull out the cup of pomegranate lips.
You whisper, “Breathe in my dreams’ bouquets”
And tighter, tighter to me press…
O, uplifting exile of the heights!
The Adriatic shore did wilt.
Emerald spirit is transparent blue.
“Let me freeze here – stomp one in Cetinje…”
Not meeting for five years, we with one sigh breathed:
What’s gathered by crumbs to give back to death?
Happiness itself rides to us in a crew,
Give lips, Allochka: there’s no one sweeter than you…

Девчонка деет антраша.
Стремясь уйти у бонн из-под рук,
Бежать, куда глядят глаза,
Капризничает каждый отрок,
Нос гувернантке показав.
Вот финский рикша: в таратайке
Бесконкурентный хлебопек
Везет «француженок» и сайки —
С дорогою за пятачок…
Я подливаю в кофе сливки
И — мил, и юн, и добросерд —
Вскрываю утренний конверт
На коленкоровой подшивке…

How tasty is coffee in early morn
In dewy-twittering garden.
Behind the last bull, behind flock
Walks the shepherd, into pipe puffing.
Behind him gallops the bull
Like a broom wagging the tail.
And healthy, and sweet of heart,
A girl makes an entrechat.
Striving away from the housemaid’s hands,
To run, where stare eyes,
Throws a tantrum every teen,
Showing nose to the governess.
Here’s Finnish rickshaw: in a car
The baker unrivaled
Drives Frenchwomen and buns
For a nickel on the road.
I pour cream into coffee
And – dear, and young, and kindly –
I open the morning envelope
On a calico lining.

На вопрос ответ один:

Мы пьянеем, пламенеем
От развернутых картин.
Грандиозным вьются змеем

Адриатика под нами,
Мы уже в снегах вершин.

Under clouds we run.
In turns be more agile,

Why so many? – we’ll ask.
But one is the response:
Because it is twenty eight,
Twenty eight serpentines!
We are drunk, we’re on fire
From rolled out paintings.
With the grandiose serpent weave
Twenty eighth serpentines!
Adriatic under us,
We are in snows of the heights.
In thirty kilometers the flames, -

Вчера
Зачем вы расцвели, осенние цветы?
Замерзните… засохните… увяньте…
Вы говорите мне о горестном таланте,
О юности моей, о жажде красоты.
Я так утомлена, мне нужен лишь покой.
Весне возврата нет, мечты мои померкли…
Мне все равно: среда, суббота ли, четверг ли, —
Живу я не живя, замерзла я душой…
Но было время… да! была я молода,
Я верила, ждала…надеялась…страдала…
Но не было «его»… Сирень благоухала,
И яблони цвели… и вяли без плода!
А я-то! я-то! я! Как я хотела жить,
Любить, безумствовать, смеяться до рыданья!
И вот явился «он»… Но новые страданья
Он мне принес с собой; он не умел любить!
Он не постиг моей трепещущей души, —
Он не сумел постичь… он понял только тело…
А я его всего, всего его хотела!..
За все мои «цветы» он мог мне дать… «гроши»!..
О, я превозмогла отчаянье и стыд, —
Его отвергла я! Я, гордая, не пала…
Окаменела я… Сирень благоухала…
И яблони цвели… Но их бесплодный вид
Внушал холодный страх и навевал печаль мне…
Спасаясь от себя, я вышла замуж; муж
Остался мне чужим, — и без слиянья душ
Я зачала детей в своей трагичной спальне…
Люблю ли я детей? О да! они — исход
Безвыходной мечты… Они — мое забвенье.
А я все жду «его», не веря в появленье, —
И снова нет «его»… В мечте — сирень цветет,
И яблони бесплодные цветущи…
Но я утомлена… Весне возврата нет…
Осенние цветы! гасите же свой свет:
Пока цветете вы, мои мученья пуще…
Сегодня
Благоухайте вы, весенние цветы!
Молю, помедлите… да пощадит вас тленье…
«Он» сам пришел ко мне, «он» принял воплощенье!
Но я… гоню «его»… чтоб сохранить… мечты!
Two days in autumn garden (poem of dilletante)
Yesterday
Why did you bloom, flowers of autumn?
You’ll dry… you’ll wilt… you’ll freeze…
You talk to me of sorrowful talent,
Of my youth, of beauty’s thirst.
I am exhausted, I need rest.
Spring doesn’t return, my dreams are lost…
It’s all same for me: Saturday, Thursday, Wednesday, -
I live not alive, the soul froze…
But there was time… yes! I was young,
I would trust…, hope… suffer…, wait,
But he was not… fragrant was lilac,
And apple trees bloomed… and without fruit did wilt!
And me! me! me! How to live I wanted,
To love, to go insane, till tears to laugh!
And here he appeared… But new sorrows
He’ll bring to me with you; he could not love!
He could not reach my trembling soul, -
He could not reach… only body did he understand…
And I everything, everything wanted!..
For all my “flowers” he could give me… “cents”!..
O, I overcame despair and embarrassment, -
I rejected him! I did not fall, I’m proud…
I petrified… Lilac was fragrant…
And flowers of apple tree… But their fruitless sort
Inspired cold fear and evoked in me sadness…
Saving myself from myself, I married; my husband
Remained a stranger to me, - and without merger of souls
I conceived children in my tragic bed…
Do I love children? O yes! They – are outcome
Of hopeless dream… they – my oblivion.
And I await “him,” in not believing in appearance, -
And again not ‘him”… In dream – lilac blooms.
And bloom the fruitless apple trees…
But I am tired… Of spring there’s no return…
Autumn flowers! Dim your luminosity:
While you bloom, my torments are strong!
Today
Be fragrant, flowers of spring!
Let the decay leave you be…

В погоду ясную видны.
Пою обрыв, который вогнут
По направленью к ним дугой.
Один из них зовется Гогланд,
И Белым - маленький, другой.
Их контуры маняще-четки,
Влекущи обликом своим.
Лелею мысль: в моторной лодке
Когда-нибудь поехать к ним.
Готовь судно, Василий Крохов,
Ты, обэстоненный рыбак!
А чтобы не было плыть плохо,
Возьмем и водку, и табак!

Over the sea rises the cliff
For the dreaming and unquestioning
In living prose – ones who’re alive!

Two islands on the horizon
In clear weather are seen.
I sing the cliff, which is concave,

My ambiguous glory
Is not ambiguous because
I am not unrightly exalted –
Not by my abilities –
But because the clear challenge
To conditions – in my poems
And exquisite surprises’ range
In the capricious words.
In me vulgarity you had sought out,
Letting one out of sight:
He the square paints,
Who with the square’s brush writes.
For the confusion of the styles they scolded,

Она, восторженная, любит.
Пусть зверство человечьих лиц
Безгрешной нежность не огрубит!
Не оттого ль и рыболов,
Любезный сердцу, инстинктивно
Ее пугает: и без слов
В нем что-то есть, что ей противно…
Людское свойство таково,
Что не людей оно пугает…
Она — земное божество,
И кто она — никто не знает!..

She lives in the dense forest,
Calling it the green temple.
In sixth hour she rises,
With forest uproar awakened.
And in the spring she washes,
Only bread eating, only water drinking,
And with light cloth on the shoulder
Each day celebrates freedom.
Of other mirrors she does not know,
Like mirror of the river.
Near is the fisherman, dweller of rocks,
Who loves the lake of summer.

About it will she tell him:

Her friends – two rabbits, moose
And fox, silver-brown.

She in delight loves.
Let beastliness of people’s faces

The fisherman not for this,
A fisherman to the heart dear,
Instinctively frightens her: and without words
In it there’s something that disgusts her.
Such is people’s affinity,
That it frightens men not…
She – earthly divinity,
And here she – nobody knows it!

Девятнадцативешней впечатления жизни несравненно новее,
Несравненно острее, чем готовому встретить май тридцатой весны.
Девятнадцативешней легче в истину верить, как в прекрасную фею,
Как бы ни были годы, — восемнадцать минувших, — тяжелы и грустны…
И когда расцветают бирюзовые рощи и душистый горошек,
Ей представить наивно, что они расцветают для нее, для одной;
И когда вылетают соловьями рулады из соседних окошек,
Ей представить наивно, что поет кто-то близкий, кто-то тайно-родной…
Девятнадцативешней может лес показаться никогда не рубимым,
Неувядными маки, человечными люди, неиссячным ручей.
Девятнадцативешней может сделаться каждый недостойный любимым:
Ведь его недостойность не видна, непонятна для пресветлых очей…
И когда молодые — о, душистый горошек! О, лазурные розы! —
Веселятся резвуньи, мне мучительно сладко, но и больно за них…
И когда голубые поэтички, как птички, под угрозами прозы,
Прозревать начинают, я в отчаяньи плачу о мечтах голубых!..

Nineteenth impression of life is newer without compare,
Without compare sharper, ready to meet him may of spring thirteenth.
It’s easier for the nineteenth to believe truth, like beautiful fair,

And when bloom azure groves and pea fragrant,

Human people, streams inexhaustible, undying poppies.

Frolics have fun, it’s sweetly tortuous, but it’s painful for them…
And when blue poetesses, like birds, under threat of prose,
Begin to ripen, and in despair I cry of blue dreams!..

Подобна улица долине.
В корзине каждой, как в гнезде,
Повсюду персики в Берлине,
В Берлине персики везде!
Витрины все и перекрестки
В вишнево-палевых тонах.
Берлин и персик! вы ль не тезки,
Ты, нувориш, и ты, монах?..
Асфальтом зелень опечалив,
Берлин сигарами пропах…
А бархат персиковый палев,
И персики у всех в устах!
И чувства более высоки,
И даже дым, сигарный дым,
Тех фруктов впитывая соки,
Проникся чем-то молодым!
Я мог бы сделать много версий,
Но ограничусь лишь одной:
Благоухает волей персик
Над всей неволей площадной!

Еще каких-нибудь пять станций,
И, спрятав паспорт, как девиз,
Въезжаем в вольный город Данциг,
Где нет ни армии, ни виз!
Оттуда, меньше получаса,
Где палевеет зыбкий пляж,
Курорта тонкая гримаса —
Костюмированный голяш…
Сквозь пыльных листьев блеклый шепот
Вульгарничает казино —
То не твое ли сердце, Цоппот,
Копьем наживы пронзено?
И топчет милые аллейки
Твои международный пшют.
Звучат дождинки, как жалейки,
И мокрый франт смешон, как шут…

Пойдем на улицу Шопена, —
О ней я грезил по годам…
Заметь: повеяла вервэна
От мимо проходящих дам…
Мы в романтическом романе?
Растет иль кажется нам куст?..
И наяву ль проходит пани
С презрительным рисунком уст?..
Благоговейною походкой
С тобой идем, как не идем…
Мелодий дымка стала четкой,
И сквозь нее мы видим дом,
Где вспыхнут буквы золотые
На белом мраморе: «Здесь жил,
Кто ноты золотом литые
В сейф славы Польши положил».
Обман мечты! здесь нет Шопена,
Как нет его квартиры стен,
В которых, — там, у гобелена, —
Почудился бы нам Шопен!..

Уже Сентябрь над Новым Светом
Позолотил свой синий газ,
И фешенебельным каретам
Отрадно мчаться всем зараз…
Дань отдаем соблазнам стольким,
Что вскоре раздадим всю дань…
Глаза скользят по встречным полькам,
И всюду — шик, куда ни глянь!
Они проходят в черных тальмах
И гофрированных боа.
Их стройность говорит о пальмах
Там где-нибудь на Самоа…
Они — как персики с крюшоном:
Ледок, и аромат, и сласть.
И в языке их притушенном
Такая сдержанная страсть…
Изысканный шедевр Guerlain’a —
Вервэна — в воздухе плывет
И, как поэзия Верлэна,
В сердцах растапливает лед.
Идем назад по Маршалковской,
Что солнышком накалена,
Заходим на часок к Липковской:
Она два дня уже больна.
Мы — в расфуфыренном отэле,
Где в коридорах полумгла.
Снегурочка лежит в постели
И лишь полнеет от тепла…
Лик героини Офенбаха
Нам улыбается в мехах,
И я на пуф сажусь с размаха,
Стоящий у нее в ногах.
И увлечен рассказом близким
О пальмах, море и сельце,
Любуюсь зноем австралийским
В игрушечном ее лице…

Like a valley is the street.
In each basket, as in a every burrow,
There are peaches in Berlin,
In Berlin there are peaches everywhere!
Showcases and crossroads
In cherry-fiery tones.
Berlin and peach! You are not namesakes,
You, nouveau riche and you, the monk?..
Saddening with green the asphalt,
Smelled of cigars Berlin…
And flaming is the peach velvet,
And peaches on the lips!
And higher were the feelings,
And even smoke, the cigar smoke,
The juices of those fruit absorbing,
I got into something young!
I could have made many versions,
But I will limit just there:
Fragrant is the peach of freedom
Over the slavery of the square!

We ride into the free city Danzig,
Where there is no army or visas!
From there, half an hour the lesser,
Where the blurry beach does fade,
The thin grimace of the resort –
A costumed nude.
Through dusty leaves the faded whisper
Makes the casino vulgar –

With a spear pierced alive?
And stomps on dear allies

Let’s go to the street of Chaupin, -

Deception of dream! There’s no Chaupin,
Like there’s no walls on his flat,
In which – there, in the tapestry,
Chaupin would be imagined!

Already September over the New World
Gilded its blue gas,
And the fashionable chariots
Gratifyingly run at once…
We pay tribute to so many temptations,
That soon tribute we give away…
Eyes slide on meeting Polish ladies,
And everywhere – swank, where you may!
They pass in the black talmas
And corrugated boas.
Their trimness speaks of palms
Somewhere in Samoa…
They – like peaches in a cup:
See ice, and sweetness, and smell.
And in their subdued tongue
Is such a passion restrained…
Exquisite masterpiece of Gourlain –
Verven – in the air floats
And, like poetry of Verven,
The ice melts in the hearts.
We go back on Marshalkovsky’s,
That by the sun heated
We walk an hour on Lipkovsky’s:
She for two days is sick already.
We – in overdressed hotel,
Where it is half-darkness in the hall.
In the bed lies Snow Maiden,
And goes full from warmth…

And I on stool sit on the range,
Standing at feet of her.
And absorbed in the story near
Of village, sea and palms,

Fragrant pea (fairy tale)
Simple and tender, like thoughts of kids,
At pedestals and veranda columns
