Скрылось первое озеро в желтый
Длинностебельный лильчатый шарф,
Что при солнце слепительно золот:
Это — тинистое Пиен-Ярв.

А за ним — удаленное к югу,
Растворенное в голубизне,
Голубому подобное лугу, —
Дремлет Изана-Ярв в полусне.

Мы идем, как лунатики, в чарах,
Отдаляясь от моря и рек.

Под сосновою скользкой горою,

Салютуя удилищем влаге,

Наклоняет над озером Пан.

Но вся песня была бы бестактна,

Forest sketch

The forest of pine. The road is fawn.

I sit, incinerating bonfire, in fir forest.

Hewing the wood I sit till even…

Rustle the green leaves of birches…

The angry bee over anthills,

Over burdocks and fly agarics

Buzzes and circles, with anger made powerless.

The muddy road. The trees are conifers.

Она читает зимой Евангелье,
Она мечтает о вешнем ангеле.
Душой поэта и аполлонца
Все ожидает литавров солнца!

Умом ребенок, душою женщина,
Всегда капризна, всегда изменчива,
Она тоскует о предвесеньи,
О незабудках, о росной сени…

И часто в ложе, на пестрой опере,
Когда ей сердце мечты отропили,
Она кусает платок, бледнея, —
Дэмимонденка и лесофея!..

Forest Fairy

In winter she reads the Gospel,

And dreams of angel of the spring.

With the poet’s and Apollonian soul

She awaits timpani of the sun!

Child in mind, woman in soul,

All capricious, all mutable,

Over pre-spring she sorrows,

Of forget-me-nots, of dewy hay…

And often on couch, at colorful opera,

When the dreams oppressed her heart,

She bites the handkerchief, grows paler, -

Forest fairy and demimonde!..

Белеет черемуха над сонной гусынею,
И море прохладою подернулось синею…
А в поле так воздушно! а в парке так сосново!
О, радости праздного! восторг безвопросного!
Где желтые лютики златеют на солнышке,
Забегали клевера веселые волнышки,
И белые бабочки, и белые курочки
Доверчиво ластятся к резвящейся Мурочке…
Блаженство бессмысленно, и в летней лилейности —
Прекрасен и сладостен триумф безыдейности…
Лишь думой о подвиге вся сладость окислена,
И как-то вздыхается невольно двусмысленно…

Summer poem

Over the sleepy goose turns white bird cherry,

And with the blue chill twitched the sea…

And in fields it’s so airy! And in park it’s so pine!

O, joy of the idle! Delight with no question!

Where yellow buttercups turn golden in the sun,

The happy waves of clover run in,

And white butterflies, and white chickens

Trustingly frolicking to Mura caress…

Bliss is senseless, and in summer lilies –

Beautiful and sweet is triumph of lack of ideas…

But with thought of feat has oxidized the sweetness,

And somehow sighs involuntarily ambiguous…

Студёной синью блещет озеро,

The lake shimmers with blue coldness,

Shivering the noon rays.

Buzzing of velvet bees, buzz to rose

Aspires, buzzing, like keys.

Over the puddle of malachite

Buzzes mosquito, mesmerized.

Каких не бывает на свете,
Расставил тончайшие сети,
В которые ловит эстетов — Амор
Искусно.

Луною, наполнен сомнамбул фужер
И устричным сердцем, и морем.
И тот, кто ликером аморим,
Тому орхидейное нежит драже
Рот вкусно.

Уста и фужер сетью струн сплетены,
При каждом глотке чуть звенящих,
Для нас — молодых, настоящих, —
Для нас, кто в Сейчас своего влюблены
Истому.

Лишь тот, кто отрансен, блестящ, вдохновен,
Поймет тяготенье к ликеру,
Зовущему грезы к узору,
К ликеру под именем: Crеme de verveine —
Больному.

Liqueur from vervain

Liqueur from vervain – the dreamer’s liqueur,

Of which there is none in the world,

Arranged the thinnest nets,

In which to catch aesthetes –

Amour artfully.

Bottle is full of moon and sleepwalkers

And oyster heart, and the sea.

And he, who is amorous of the liqueur,

To him cossets the orchid dragee

Mouth artfully.

The lips and the bottle are wound with strings,

Ringing with each gulp,

For us – real, young, -

For us, that with Now we are in love

For real.

Just he, who’s distracted, shining, inspiring,

Attraction to liqueur will comprehend,

Calling the dreams to painting,

To liqueur under name: Crème de verveine –

To sick one.

Lilies of the soul

Lilies, clean lilies,

Stars of Saron fields…

In radiant soul the white lilies’ crop

Will bloom till delight of harvest,

And, having settled, evaporated swamp’s fog,

Only, threatening, sun is deceased.

In radiant soul - the crop of white lilies,

And such soul – alien it is.

How golden is the bloom! How the bloom is pale!

Do you recall? In day poured over the petals

With gamma of ringing rainbow – but weakened the ray,

And melodies of lilies have faded.

And at dawn again is quiet the white bell,

The rays have flared up the sun of gold.

Fearlessly gathering the crop of the snow white,

Will gather the spawn of the prophet.

May you not be afraid of surrounding plants:

This harvest does not know disgrace.

You will arrogantly reap crops’ atonement,

But won’t understand the soul – like a prophet…

Aspire to catch the Aeolus,

In colored net, kid.

Stupefies mathiola.

Chirps the stream.

And in charm the nails

Lilac, driving in, painless.

On churchyard it is aflame,

All – violet gust.

In the June’s blooming

Your bushes tilt,

The blossom is singing,

Lilac winged!

A heroic nature’s gust,

Flight in the blueness bottomless,

Melodious voice amid the lines

In this is this lyre’s pathos!

Her tear a tear is called

And it appears like a tear,

And heart beats with a heart full,

Thunder trembles in it with thunder.

The exquisite half-tones

Are not null, but half-tones.

Tortuous are Agnesse’s moans

And in them is a real pain.

Prince Vandelin’s vision

There’s Vandelin and not a word,

The occurrence’s reason

Whose – in role of reasons of the world.

And her sorcerer is a sorcerer,

And not “on purpose,” “for kids.”

And poems jingle with copper

And smell with redolence of fields.

Она заходила антрактами —
красивая, стройная, бледная,
С глазами, почти перелитыми
всей синью своей в мои,
Надменная, гордая, юная
и все-таки бедная-бедная
В ей чуждом моем окружении
стояла, мечту затаив.
Хотя титулована громкая
ее мировая фамилия,
Хотя ее мужа сокровища
диковинней всяких чудес,
Была эта тихая женщина —
как грустная белая лилия,
Попавшая в море, — рожденная,
казалось бы, грезить в пруде…
И были в том вычурном городе
мои выступленья увенчаны
С тюльпанами и гиацинтами
бесчисленным строем корзин,
К которым конверты приколоты
с короной тоскующей женщины,
Мечтавшей скрестить наши разные,
опасные наши стези…
Но как-то все не было времени
с ней дружески поразговаривать:
Иными глазами захваченный,
свиданья я с ней не искал,
Хотя и не мог не почувствовать
ее пепелившего зарева,
Не знать, что она — переполненный
и жаждущий жажды бокал…
И раз, только раз, в упоении
приема толпы триумфального,
Спускаясь со сцены по лесенке,
ведущей железным винтом,
Я с нею столкнулся, прижавшейся
к стене, и не вынес печального
Молящего взора — дотронулся
до губ еще теплым стихом…

Lily in the sea

She went in intermissions –

Beautiful, pale, thin,

With eyes, that almost poured

With their blueness into mine,

Arrogant, proud, young

And poor-poor still

In alien surroundings of mine

She stood, hiding the dream.

Though titled is her

Loud last name in the world,

Although her husband’s treasures

Are wilder than marvels all,

She was a quiet lady –

Like sorrowful white lilies,

Fall into sea, -

Born to be dreaming in ponds, it seems…

And in that pretentious city

Were crowned my performances

With tulips and hyacinths

In formations of baskets countless,

With which envelopes are pinned

With a yearning woman’s crown,

To baptize our different ones she dreams,

Dangerous paths of ours…

But somehow there was no time

To amiably with her talk:

Captured by other’s eyes,

To meet her I did not seek,

Although I could not fail to feel

Her glow ash sowing,

Not to know that she – filled

Is glass of thirst thirsting…

And once, only once,

In acceptance of triumphal crowed,

Descending from stage on staircase,

Leading with screw of iron,

I collided with her, pressed

To the wall, and did not bear the sad

Supplicant look – her lips

I touched with warm verse…

The flock of blue antelopes

Covered grasses, covered bumps:

But stepdaughter of the deacon,

Bending, like a lizard,

Violates illusion:

What lawlessness!

If you want to go to Andalusia,

Do not by Poshekhonye pass…

We go to rails, smiling:

The telegraph wire

Has hummed;

Thunders the cloud, -

To the storm the deed.

Но почему же твой завтрак — скумбрия и геркулес?
Ах, понакрала бы яиц, — курицы стали носиться, —
И наутек — через поле, через канаву и в лес!

В поле теперь благодатно: там поспевает картофель,
Розовая земляника; гриб набухает в лесу.
Вспомни, забывшая травы, что у тебя лисопрофиль,
Вспомни, что ты каждым вскидом напоминаешь лису.

В рыжей лукавой головке, чувствую, косточки лисьи
(Вот еще что: на лисицу очень похожа оса!..)
Взгляд твой крылат, да пристало ль грезить лисице о выси?
Это едва ли удобно: аэроплан и лиса…

Fox-Maiden

How you look like the rogue-fox today in profile.

But what for is your breakfast – porridge and mackerel?

Ah, if she stole the faces, - to play started hens, -

And ran away – through levee, through wood and through the fields!

It is graceful in the field: thus potato ripens,

Pink strawberry: in forest mushroom swells.

Remember, forgotten grass, that you have profile of fox,

Remember, that you the forest recall in each glance.

In sly orange head, feeling, fox’s bones

(Here it is: bee looks a lot like fox!..)

Your winged look, did it start for maiden to dream of heights?

It is almost convenient: airplane and forests…

The radiant timpans thunder

Of fiery days’ luminaries,

And, in fear, the prosaic Centaurs

We laid down temple in Locarno,

Inseminating the earth’s heaven…

Blooming from the road milestones

To themselves from afar draw:

About the Czech we have forgotten,

You had invited the Pole.

Thus! In an unescapable world’s thirst

A wise step you did commit:

Not in vain the seven-stringed lyre –

Now German is your enemy…

Having multiplied his efforts,

Having set an aim all-good,

You illumined wings of the universe

With a seven-colored round.

In it – true sign, that the fine day

The inclement day to transform

Already hurries. Bow down, passerby:

Let! – with symbol of faith Locarno

Illuminates to us twilight of day!

Лососья идиллия

Там, где растет на берегу осина
‎И вкривь, и вкось,
Вплыла из моря в речку лососина,
‎За ней — лосось.

И стала выкрапчатая лососька
‎Метать икру.
На душегубке слышен шепот: «Фроська,
‎Оставь игру.

Не шевелись. Ах, лучше б ты осталась
‎На берегу.
Зря к делу на ночное затесалась…
‎Дай острогу».

И дедушка, дрожащею, но верной
‎Сухой рукой
Взмахнул, слегка прицелился примерно
‎И — острогой!

Salmon idyll

There, where on shore grows the aspen

Askew, crookedly,

Swam from the sea to river salmon,

Salmon – behind it.

And started to throw the caviar

The speckled salmon.

Whisper is heard in gas chamber:

“Froska, leave the game.

Don’t move. Best if you remained

On the shore.

In vain for night deed I got there…

Give the spear.”

And granddad, with trembling, but loyal

Dry fingers

Waved, aiming lightly

And – spear!

Лунные слезы легких льнущих ко льну сомнамбул.
Ласковая лилейность лилий, влюбленных в плен
Липких зеленых листьев. В волнах полеты камбал,
Плоских, уклонно-телых. И вдалеке — Мадлэн.

Лень разветвлений клена, вылинявшего ало.
Палевые поляны, полные сладких сил.
Лютиковые лютни. В прожилках фьоль опала.
Милая белолебедь в светлом раскрыльи крыл.

Лучше скользить лианно к солнечному Граалю,
Кроликов ланно-бликих ловко ловить в атлас
Платьев лиловых в блестках. Пламенно лик реалю
И, реализм качеля, плачу печалью глаз.

Moon Glares

Moon tears, clinging light to somnambulists’ linen,

Light linearity of lilies, in love with the prison

Of sticky green leaves. In waves flights of flounders,

Flat, evasively-bodied. And Madeleine from afar.

Laziness of ramifications of maple, faded scarlet.

Pale-yellow meadows, full of strengths sweet.

Ranunculus lutes. The violet opal in veins.

Dear white swan in light opening of wings.

Better to slide smoothly to sunny Graal.

The moon-glare rabbits it’s easy to catch in dresses

Violet in in sequins. Fiery is likeness of real

And, on swings with realism, I cry with sadness of eyes.

И старенького дворца.
Салопницы и постельницы

Построена мужичком,
Не яхточка, а барахточка,

Was little yacht,

Not a yacht but a flounder

Liking to sail bottoms-up…

It was double-seated,

And, if not to sail together in it,

Stable under oar:
