Ты шла по саду, точно тень,
Грустна, верна, как Ярославна,
Была задумчивая ночь
Погружена в свои загадки…
Ты шла спокойно, без оглядки,
Я — за тобой, но вскоре — прочь:

Igor And Yaroslavna
It happened, maybe, long ago,
And maybe, very recently.
You, leaning to the window,
Like Yaroslavna waited for me.
And I, as Igor, that into prison
Was taken by the Plovtsian horde,
Languished, called, and Apollo
Lured me with the smile of a child.
The shackle of obstacles I could not
Throw off in ash of feelings in pleasing,
And I had suffered, I had wept,
Praying to fate to return me my freedom.
Somehow smiled at me the day,
And I ran to you without glory.
You walked across the garden, like a shade,
Like Yaroslavna, sorrowful, loyal,
Thoughtful was the night,
Loaded in its puzzles its own…
You walked calmly, without looking behind,
I – after you, but soon – be gone:
Once you did not feel
With your soul, with flair of coming
That you are near – what dreams?
What inspiration! What freedom!
And I left… it is dark within my soul…
And, like Yaroslavna, you wait still…

But maybe, only recently.

Он тем хорош, что он совсем не то,
Что думает о нём толпа пустая,
Стихов принципиально не читая,
Раз нет в них ананасов и авто.
Фокстрот, кинематограф и лото -
Вот, вот куда людская мчится стая!
А между тем душа его простая,
Как день весны. Но это знает кто?
Благословляя мир, проклятье войнам
Он шлёт в стихе, признания достойном,
Слегка скорбя, подчас слегка шутя
Над всею первенствующей планетой...
Он - в каждой песне им от сердца спетой,
Иронизирующее дитя.

He’s good for this, that he is not
What empty crowd about him thought,
Not reading in the principal poems,
That they don’t have pineapples and automobiles.
Foxtrot, cinematographer and lotto –
Here, here rushes people’s flock!
And between them his simple soul,
Like day of spring. But who knows?
Blessing the world, to war sends a curse
In a poem, worthy of confessions,
Slightly grieving, lightly joking sometimes
On all the priority planet…
He – in each song sung for him from heart,
Ironic child.

Утомился ты на пашне, —
Чай, и сам развлечься рад.
День сегодня — как вчерашний,
Новый день — как день назад.
Захвати с собою лесы,
Червяков и поплавки
И ступай за мыс на плесы
Замечтавшейся реки.
Разведи костёр у борозд,
Где ковровые поля;
Пусть потрескивает хворост,
Согревается земля…
А наловишь стерлядей ты
И противно-узких щук,
Поцелуй головку флейты, —
И польётся нежный звук.
Засмеясь, я брошу кровлю
И, волнуясь и спеша,
Прибегу к тебе на ловлю,
Так прерывисто дыша.
Ты покажешь мне добычу
(У меня ведь ты хвастун!),

Idyll
My dear one, go for the catching
Of sterlets, leaving the plow…
How you will catch, you make ready
The soup that overflows.
You are tired on the arable land, -
And would be glad to entertain.
Today – like yesterday,
New day – like day behind.
Take with you the forests,
Worms and floats
And walk beyond cape to dance
Of river that has gone to rest.
Make bonfire at the furrows,
Where fields are carpeted:
Let the brushwood crackle,
May warm up the land…
And you will catch the sterlets
And pike disgustingly thin,
Kiss the head with the flute, -
And will pour the tender sound.
Laughing, I will throw the roofing
And, worrying and hurrying,
I will run to you for the catching,
So fitfully breathing.
You will show me the prey
(You are a braggard to me!),
You will tell me: “I call long!” –
And you will embrace, with happiness young.
And while, snaking flexibly,
With thin waist at the bonfire
I lay the supper – you with a smile
(And the smile is so severe!)
Burning, you will attract me,
The branch – by fire lit,
And you’ll whisper: “Dear!” –
All – wishes, all – hint…

Escapees of Petrograd
To you I’m ever more sensitive,
In my soul Tyutchev rules,
With every day is deeper love,
All sweeter – sweeter are us two.
It’s hard for me myself to apprehend,
How could I have abandoned
You - maybe an hour, maybe a day,
From village having gone away…
Farewell, in pace Petrograd:
We escaped you. The exulting
Will enter us with cross in hand
In the ancient country town.
In September will bloom the yellow fields, -
Forgive, Estonian wilderness,
For a year we will let you go,
We in Narva will be covered with snow…
The more snow, the more silence,
Ego does express still more:
The more delightful are the days,
The longer we will be alone…
In the blue oak office
I will sing of the new summer,
I will wait for new victories,
From your presence getting warmer…
And you, like soul’s knightess,
Thanks to whom devastation
Of nice life – somewhere in that place,
You will press your lips to my own…
Изверги самовлюбленные
Невозможно читать начинающих авторов,
Чья бездарность бессмертней талантов иных,
У кого и вчера, и сегодня и завтра
Одинаково невыразительный стих.
И не только читать — принимать невозможно их,
Этих извергов самовлюбленных: они
Могут вирши безграмотные и ничтожные
Вам читать положительно целые дни.
Помню, в молодости принимал я их стаями,
Терпеливо выслушивал «опыты» их,
И читалось мне, что неудобочитаемо,
Где бездарность бессмертней талантов иных…
Маляры, офицеры, швейцары, садовники,
Столяры и сектанты, медички, дьячки
Лезли все в соловьи, в вожаки и в любовники,
В наглой скромности людям втирая очки…
В пору, помнится, расположения доброго
Одного «баритона» прослушав всю ночь,
Я совсем неожиданно грохнулся в обморок
И, очнувшись, кричал истерически: «Прочь!..»
Как они не поймут, что они — обреченные
И что прока вовеки не будет из них?…
Это просто больные иль просто влюбленные,
Чья бездарность бессмертней талантов иных!
Self-loving monsters
I can’t read the beginning authors,
Whose mediocrity is more immortal than talents of others,
From whom yesterday, today and tomorrow
Are similarly inexpressible poems.
And not only to read – you can’t accept,
These self-loving monsters: they
Poems illiterate and insignificant
Read to you positively for all days.
In youth in flocks I accepted them,
Patiently listened to “experience” of theirs,
And I read, what was illegible,
Where mediocrity is more immortal than others’ talents…
Painters, officers, doormen, gardeners,
Carpenters and sectarians, doctors, deacons,
Tried to be nightingales, leaders and lovers,
In naked modesty rubbing glasses to people…
In time, I recall, of location kind
Having listened to one “baritone” all night,
I unexpectedly fell into a fit
And, waking up, cried hysterically: “Leave!..”
Why don’t they understand that they’re undone
And that there’ll be no good of them for centuries?
They’re simply ill or they are in love,
Whose mediocrity is more immortal than others’ talents!

Три женщины и три любви.
Не слишком ли? Как ни лови,
Безумец, счастья, кроме горя

Я не живу душой на свете,
Хотя реально в нем живу;
Но где мой край, где шири эти, —
Я вам навряд ли назову.
Мне непонятна жизнь земная,
Темна, ненужна и гадка;
Зачем мне жить — не понимаю:
Я здесь без чувств, без языка…
Ведь жизнь души моей — в пространстве,
Ни на земле, ни на луне,
Ни в миге и ни в постоянстве,
Но царства злобного — извне.
From outside
I don’t live with my soul in the world,
Although I live in it really:
But where this width, where’s my land, -
I will call you unlikely.
Earthly life I don’t understand,
It’s dark, unnecessary and evil;
What for to live – I don’t comprehend:
I’m here without tongue or feelings.
All life of my soul – in cosmos,

Как блёкло ткал лиловый колокольчик
Линялую от луни звукоткань!
Над ним лунел вуалевый эольчик
И, камешки кидая в воду: «кань»,
Чуть шепотал устами, как коральчик…
Он был оно: ни девочка, ни мальчик.
На озере дрожал электробот.
Все слушали поэта-экстазера
И в луносне тонули от забот.
Но призраками Серого Мизэра
Шарахнулся пугающий набат, —
И в отблесках пылающего замка
Умолк поэт, как жалкий акробат…
— Царица Жизнь воспитана как хамка!
Mockery
How palely wove the violet bell
The sound fabric faded from harrier!
Above it mooned the vial aeol
And, throwing stones in water: “canoe,”
Barely whispered with his lips, like coral…
He was thus: not a boy, not a girl.
Electric bot trembled on the lake.
All listened to poet-ecstasy
And in the moonsleep they drowned from cares.
But with the ghosts of Grey Miser
The frightening alarm bell jumped back, -
And in reflections of palace on fire
Like pitiful acrobat, poet went quiet.
Queen Life is raised like a boor!

Betrayal of May
I was born in May, in a month of spring,
Joyful and glad,
Noisy and fragrant,
And roses told:
“We will dress you in halo of light –
Like a prayer, clean.”
And sun smiled, sun sparkled,
With tender hello
Honoring the birth:
Sun caught on fire, purply flared
And with spark of inspiration
The poet burned!
Dressed with colors from child cradle,
I sang like a nightingale
Happy and loud.
Impressing the world where sorrowed all,
With young head and soul
Of a child.
Time passed – and sun dimmed in clouds,
Did not shine with tenderness,
Song mowed malice;
In flying winds fell the roses,
Body was exhausted,
Blunted was strength.
Time passed…. And the joy of my spring days
Melted in tears,
A heart not heeding;
And now I cry, on my knees I cry
About deceased dreams,
About betrayal of May!

Этот лес совсем по Мейерхольду
Ставила природа, и когда
Я войду в него, свою Изольду
Встречу в нем — Изольду изо льда…
Взгляд ее студеный смотрит зорко
Сквозь обставшие ее леса.
Блестко выхрусталено озерко,
И на нем заката полоса.
Создал чей резец мою снегурку,
Девственную женщину мою?
В Сивку-Бурку — вещую Каурку
Превращу покорную скамью…
И взлетя на ней победолетно,
Вскрою вены — кровью станет лед,
Голубой снегурки лед бесплотный,
Чтобы он воспринял кровь и плоть!

The nature put, and when I
Come into it, my Isolde
I’ll meet there – Isolde out of ice…
Her cold look vigilantly stares
Through forests surrounding her.
Brightly has crystallized the lake,
And in the sunset’s streak.
Which cutter created the snow maiden,
My virgin woman?
In Sivka-Burka – the Kaurka prophetic
I will turn into a humble bench…
And triumphantly flying over her,
I’ll open veins – blood will be ice,
The maiden’s ice incorporeal blue snow
To accept flesh and blood!

Писать мне мысль пришла такая
(Я не сочту ее грехом)
Струей столетнего Токая,
Иначе — пушкинским стихом,
По выраженью Николая
Васильевича, кто знаком,
Не знаю, мало ли вам, много ль,
Но кто зовется все же — Гоголь…
Любовь веснует у него,
Горит лимон в саду пустыни,
И в червонеющей долине —
Повсюдных знаков торжество.
И зимней ночи полусвет
Дневным сменился полумраком…
Все это мог сказать поэт,
Отмеченный парнасским знаком.
А — звукнет крыльев серебро?
А — расквадрачен мир на мили?
В снег из слоновой кости были
Вы вникните, как-то остро! —
Растенья выточены. В стиле
Подобном — Гоголя перо.

To me to write came such thought

Under the expression of Nicholas
Vasilyevich, who is known,

Love in him springs,
Burns the lemon in desert garden,
And in valley red-tinged –
Everywhere the signs’ triumph.
And the half-light of winter night
Changed into day’s half-darkness…
All this could say the poet,
Marked with the sign of Parnassas.
And – will sound the finger of the wings?
And – the world is squared off for miles?
Into snow of elephant bone
Somehow sharp, you got in! –
The plants are chiseled. In style
Similar – feather of Gogol.

И воцарится мир:
Яд зависти к страданьям
Влечет ненастный мир.
О, зависть ненавистна

Рай шепчет укоризну,

Мы пять минут назад пришли из парка.
О, если б знала ты, как он красив!
Предвешний снег, вчера белевший марко,
Сегодня снова чист. Остановив
Начавшееся таянье, ночная
Метель опять вернула нам зиму.
Я не горюю вовсе потому,
Что это лишь на день, моя родная:
Ведь завтра снова солнце загремит
В свои победоносные литавры,
И голову весна украсит в лавры
Северновешней девушке Лилит…
Весь парк в горах. Он кедрово-сосново —
Еловый. Много тут и пихт густых.
Он каждый день выглядывает ново
На склонах гор отвесных и крутых.
Посередине парка вьется тонко
Извилистая журчная речонка,
Где в изобилье черная форель,
Которую вылавливаем ловко, —
Лишь поднесет к устам своим свирель
Пленительный на севере апрель —
Я и моя подруга-рыболовка,
К реке ведет громадной буквой «Эс»
Отлогая дубовая аллея,
Куда мы любим летом под навес
Дубов войти, а там, за ней, белея
На противоположной стороне
Реки, на скалах, в синей тишине
Седых, голубоватых, в виде рамок
Растущих, кедров — спит изящный замок,
Где сорок пять покоев. Но штандарт
Над башнею давно уже разорван.
Лишь изредка на шпиль присядет ворон —
Достойный лихолетья злого бард…
А под горой, под тридцатисаженной
Слоистой и цветистой крутизной,
Своею сизо-голубой волной
Плеща о берег, солнцем обожженный
В златоиюльский изумрудный зной
Утонченное призрачное море
Балтийское — во всем своем просторе.
Есть в парке грот, у замка, над рекой,
Где ручеек прозрачный, еле слышно
Журча, течет. А перед входом пышно
Цветет шиповник розовой стеной.
В саду фруктовом груши и черешни,
В оранжерее крупный виноград
И персики. И я, как инок, рад
Бродить средь них в день светозарно-вешний.
Под осень ал колючий барбарис,
Из узких ягод чьих готовим литры
Ликера, упоительные цитры,
И наши знатоки — один, Борис,
Нарциссов принц, и Александр, принц лилий,
Ему приписывают свойство крылий,
С чем даже я, из знатоков знаток,
Не стану спорить, пробуя глоток…
Итак, для твоего, голубка, взора
Я набросал окрестность замка Орро.
От нашей хижины в полуверсте,
Он виден из окна моей рабочей
Залитой светом комнаты, где очи
Фелиссы мне твердят о красоте!
From “Letters to First”
We came back from the park five minutes ago.
O, if you only knew, how it is pretty!
Yesterday whitened, the preceding snow
Today is newly clean. The melting
Has begun stomping, the night’s
Flurry again brought back winter to us.
I do not sorrow for this,
That it’s for a day, my dearest:
Tomorrow will thunder the sun
In its victorious kettledrums,
And spring will decorate head in laurels
Of Northern Spring maiden Lilith…
All park in mountains. It’s pine-cedar –
Fir. Many here are dense firs.
He every day looks out again
On steep and sheer slopes of mountains.
In middle of park curls in ways thin
The winding murmuring stream,
Where there’s black trout in plenty,
Which we deftly are catching, -
Will bring a flute to the lips
April captivating on north –
And my girlfriend-fisher
With huge letter “S” leads to river
A gentle oak valley,
Where we love in summer under cover
Of oaks to come, and there, behind her,
Whitening on the other side
Of river, on rocks, in blue silence
Of gray, blue, in sight of frames
Growing, cedars – sleeps exquisite palace,
Where there’s forty-five chambers.
But for long was torn from tower banner.

Я вел концерт, душе воскликнув: «Пой!»
Петь рождена, душа моя запела,
И целый зал заполнила душа.

И восхищу кого-нибудь, я прав!»
В антракте сторож подал мне депешу —
От неизвестной женщины «поздрав».
И сидя в лекторской, в истоме терпкой,

In university’s giant hall,
With Balkan crowd filled,
Having come to listen to Russian poet,
Shouting to soul: “Sing!” I led the concert,
My soul, born to sing, is singing,
And soul fills the whole hall.
And all became white, became winged,
And music was in the ears of all.
And thought I: “O, if someone
I console and inspire, I am right!”
Janitor gave me dispatch in intermission –
“Congratulations” from the unknown broad.
And sitting in lecture hall, in tart languor,
I speak once with one, once with another,
I was filled with Serbian delight
With short name tight…
Two years passed. North. Fir forest.
All is otherwise: nature, people, light.
And then again, on eve of Christmas,
From her “Hello” I get.
I’m not myself. All deeper in heart is wound.
I fall into the blues more often.
O, woman distant from Yadran –
In my life, an unmet friend.

Oh, how nice with you goes Loire’s malachite,

Paint palaces, superstition’ nests,

Раньше паюсной икрою мы намазывали булки.
Слоем толстым, маслянистым приникала к ним икра,
Без икры не обходилось пикника или прогулки.
Пили мы за осетрину — за подругу осетра.
Николаевская белка, царская красноголовка,
Наша знатная козелка, — что сравниться может с ней,
С монопольной русской хлебной?!.. Выливалась в горло ловко…
К ней икра была закуской лучше всех и всех вкусней!
А в серебряной бумаге, мартовская, из Ростова,
Лакированным рулетом чаровавшая наш глаз!?…
Разве позабыть возможно ту, что грезиться готова,
Ту, что наш язык ласкала, ту, что льнула, как атлас!
Как бывало ни озябнешь, как бывало ни устанешь,
Как бывало ни встоскуешь — лишь в столовую войдешь:
На графин кристальной водки, на икру в фарфоре взглянешь, —
Сразу весь повеселеешь, потеплеешь, отдохнешь!..

First with pressed caviar we slathered rolls.
With layer thick, buttery nestled to them caviar,
Without caviar we missed picnic and the walks.
We drank for the sturgeon’s sister.
Nikolayev’s squirrel, redhead of the tsar,
Our noble goat – what with her could compare,
With Russian bread monopoly?!.. Deftly poured in the throat…
And caviar with it was better snack and tastier than all!
And on silver paper, March, from Rostov,
That with the lacquered roulette our eyes had charmed?
Can be forgotten she, who to dream is ready,
Her, who caressed our tongue, her, who like satin clung?
As it was you won’t get cold, as it was you won’t get tired,
How you will yearn – you will enter the mess
Hall: on pitcher of crystal vodka, on caviar in porcelain you’ll stare, -
At once you’ll go happy, go warm, will rest!..

Для них, погрязших в мерзком блуде, -
Бессмысленный, нелепый слог…

Элегантная коляска, в электрическом биеньи,
Эластично шелестела по шоссейному песку;
В ней две девственные дамы, в быстро-темпном упоеньи,
В Ало-встречном устремленьи — это пчелки к лепестку.
А кругом бежали сосны, идеалы равноправии,
Плыло небо, пело солнце, кувыркался ветерок;
И под шинами мотора пыль дымилась, прыгал гравий,
Совпадала с ветром птичка на дороге без дорог…
У ограды монастырской столбенел зловеще инок,
Слыша в хрупоте коляски звуки «нравственных пропаж».
И с испугом отряхаясь от разбуженных песчинок,
Проклинал безвредным взором шаловливый экипаж.
Хохот, свежий точно море, хохот, жаркий точно кратер,
Лился лавой из коляски, остывая в выси сфер,
Шелестел молниеносно под колесами фарватер,
И пьянел вином восторга поощряемый шоффэр…
July Noon
Elegant carriage, in electric pulse,
Elastically on highway sand rustled;
In it two virgin dames, in rapture fast-paced,
In scarlet-meeting rush – as bees to petal.
And around ran the pines, equality’s ideals,
Sailed the sky, sang the sun, the wind somersaulted,

And, with fright brushing off the awakened sands,
With harmless sight the playful carriage he cursed.
Laughter, fresh, like the sea, laughter hot, like a crater,
Chilling in height of spheres, like lava poured from the carriage,
Lightning-fast trembled the channel’s wheels under,
And to go drunk with wine of delight the driver encouraged.
