Since 2021, the Saco Arts Commission has worked to enhance public spaces by uniting community members, elected officials, and city staff. One of its most exciting ongoing projects, the Traffic Signal Cabinet Renovation Project, transforms everyday infrastructure into vibrant works of public art.
From the start, this initiative has been a collaboration between the City of Saco and Thornton Academy’s talented student artists. Guided by the AP Art & Design program, the project not only beautifies the city but also provides young artists with a platform to showcase their creativity in a meaningful way.
Phase I (2022): Three traffic signal cabinets were transformed by Thornton Academy students:
🎨 Abigail Fox ’22 – Saco Island
🎨 Kaitlyn Rodriguez ’22 – Eastman Park
🎨 Riley Sullivan ’22 – Water & Main Streets
Phase II (Fall 2023): Two additional cabinets enriched the city’s visual landscape:
🎨 In-Young “Amelia” Hwang ’24 – Fairfield & Main Streets
🎨 Zitong “Larry” Zhou ’24 – Ocean Park Road & Main Street
We are thrilled to announce the selected student artists for Phase III of this partnership:
🎨 Lillian Page ’25 – Hillview & Buxton Road
🎨 Ella Wiggs ’25 – Cascade Road & Route 1
